Welcome to empatheias' first ever test drive meme. This test drive is to help interested players test their characters in the game's environment. We've included a few prompts that incorporate specific elements of the game, though you'll find all of them have a lot of leeway for players to get as creative as necessary. Before diving in, here are a few things we'd like to remind everyone about the game in general:

• Date reminders. Reserves open Friday, July 18th and Applications open Friday, July 25th. Game will begin Friday, August 1st.
  
  
• Emotions are key! Empatheias' premise focuses on how anyone's emotions can affect their environment, be it big or small. While not every emotion will cause a reaction, significant ones definitely will. How much effect a character will have will ultimately be up to you, the player. Also, while we're giving a lot of leeway for the test drive, keep in mind that there will be some limits in the actual game.
  
  
• Everyone has an amulet. All characters have a unique amulet that is specialized for them. It will contain all of their emotion drops and it serves as the network device. Remember, communication is telepathic. Otherwise, it works basically the same.
  
  
• Assume the character is already in the game. Because "OMG WHERE AM I IS THIS REAL LIFE" threads aren't going to be very helpful in this test drive! Plus those are going to happen in-game, anyway. So to make things easier, just assume that they've been around at least a week or so. Still learning the ropes, but not a complete "first day" experience.
  
  
• First or third person allowed. Your threads can be in either first or third, but we'd advise being flexible about it. Remember, these threads can also be used in your application for samples!

Now with that out of the way, here are some prompts you guys can work from!


PROMPTS

• Prompt A: Create any scenario that could cause your character to display some kind of emotion, be it big or small, and write out how it changes the immediate area. Are there literal sparkles everywhere because they're so happy? Or is the ground starting to twist and warp due to their anger or frustration? Things exploding? Rain clouds? Since this is a test drive, don't worry about any limitations on effects—just write whatever comes to mind!

• Prompt B: The following are generic task board prompts that characters could have taken up as a job.

1. You have to collect X number of materials. Find a partner to make it easier!
   
2. There's a hostile creature attacking some of the neighboring farms. If you got a weapon, they could definitely use your help!
   
3. How about helping around the town? Delivering something, helping patch up a sign, cleaning out some of those rusted gears—the locals would definitely warm up to everyone.
   
4. Make up your own task/quest!

• Prompt C: How about giving the amulets a go? Start a telepathic conversation and see how it works. Remember, the amulets are sending out the owner's thoughts so might want to be careful about how the stream of consciousness goes…

• Prompt D: With the influx of people suddenly appearing, the locals are a bit on edge. So rather than having your character’s emotions affecting the environment, someone else's is affecting them! Maybe they were just passing by and someone had an emotional outbreak of sorts. Now they have to figure out how to deal with the aftermath—or will their own emotions make it worse? Needless to say, NPC godmodding granted 100%.

• Prompt E: Make your own! It can even involve booze and/or cats.

For your threads, put the Character Name and the Canon in the subject line to help readily identify them. You're also welcome to use more than one prompt for respondents to choose from. If you have any questions or want to brush up on the game information, refer to the Game Information entry. Otherwise, tag around and have fun!

[One person can be found all over the place today, dealing with the troubles of various NPCs. A job board is a pretty tempting thing for a do-gooder like Jude... not to mention whenever he passes someone causing an emotional mess he feels compelled to get involved.

Right now, he's dealing with a crying child who has a raincloud pouring down on her head, soaking him and everything else in the immediate area.]

Hey, it's going to be all right. I'm sure your doll will turn up. We just need to take a careful look around for it.

Anyway, who wants in? We can split the rewards fifty-fifty and maybe get some roast pork out of it.

[A fearsome monster attacking a nearby farm, huh?]

[Well, it's not really his business any more. This wise old hermit is retired! Or at least he WAS retired. Back home where the future of martial arts is turning out just fine without him. Here... well, that may be a different story.]

[So for now the old man is sitting on a large rock nearby, enjoying a pipe while he watches the beast rampage. Maybe if no one shows up, he'll have to do something. But he IS interested in seeing if any brave heroes will make an appearance.]

[ while katsa's grace had warned her, strongly, against the presence of rampaging beasts in her immediate surrounding area, she was also capable of noticing without its help the obvious signs of human inhabitants in the most certainly not abandoned farm. katsa catches a young girl who comes running out of the farmhouse and turns her away from the direction of danger. ]

Go back inside and tell your parents not to come out, all right? I'll take care of you.

[ —and the horses, too, she adds with prompting, and she pushes the girl to run. every nerve screaming, katsa turns just in time to catch the snapping jaws of the creature between her hands.

okay, so she doesn't have a weapon. not even a knife, which makes the task a little harder, but katsa is made for impossible tasks. after a few long moments of scuffling on the ground with the creature—grappling for its neck so she can twist it while the thing beats at her chest and legs with its claws—it falls limp and stays where it slumps to the ground, unmoving. katsa stands, chest heaving and covered in her own blood, but not feeling too worse for wear.

well, she's had worse.

it's like this that she turns to see roshi sitting on the rock. katsa wipes sweat from her eyes before she talks ]

[ Today, there's a strange teenage girl wearing all red, positively vibrating happiness, humming to herself. It affects the things around her, but strangely, every flower that appears from where she is a bloody red color, and she can't help pausing to admire them.

It's sort of a loop. But she seems happy enough, overly so, perhaps. Most people weren't this happy ALL THE TIME, right? ]

Heehee, oh, I should save some of these and press them! Hmhm, I'll make a book for him...! ... Oh... someone's looking? Hi there!

[ You're interesting, let her just smile in your direction, new person! ]

[Prompt B]
[ Wadanohara took to that board and the jobs listing gig as quickly as she could. Sometimes, things just don't change. She was always a total errand-running do-gooder for even, at times, complete strangers, so she takes the little jobs no one else wants. Fetch quests, basically. But, ah... she needs a partner for this...? It might be difficult.

Still, she comes to the square and agrees to it. She's curious who her partner for this job might end up being; it's a simple enough task--eliminate some of these creatures bothering people at a farmstead and then wash and dye their pelts, bringing them back to town... there's too many for her to take on by herself, and they ARE big opponents, so she admits she's very excited.

So she waits, in front of the job board, smiling brightly. She was contacted via the amulet to meet this person here, but they forgot to tell her what they looked like... ]

Oh, I wonder when they'll get here...?

[ On one particularly slow day, a girl can be seen in the Merchant's Square playing a white ocarina, her music putting emotion into the air around her, beautiful, red whisps of light and magic flowing out into the area with the song.

Come bother the girl playing? She's a strange one, but she seems nice enough...! ]

[Fighting is all she knows. Even if she had a former life, even if it wasn't always like this-- being with the Embryon and fighting for their lives as 'normal'. It's why she always has her rifle by her side.

A bit of a ways away from the monster, Argilla is set up to snipe the monster with her weapon. Maybe she could transform into her demon form, however, it's uncertain if people would approach her that way. She's doesn't want to fight... she doesn't want to scare...

She just wants to help.]

So, how does this thing work? I guess I'm not really certain if it's a good idea, but I figured reaching out wouldn't hurt. At least here, everyone seems to be comrades, or closer to that from what I've seen. I don't want to fight if it's not necessary... I'm tired of all that.

[ On the other end, Argilla can probably sense something very similarly-feeling to most demons, but it's a young girl dressed oddly in a lot of red.

She's not the only one taking down monsters--in fact, a bunch of moonlight will filter in on where she is and red water will swamp the creatures (and just the creatures, her magic only affects them), turning to a sticky, blood-like substance, suffocating them completely. She did miss one or two, though...

That said, she's going to look back behind her, having sensed Argilla was there, and smiles. ]

[ After only a week or so of being here, it's easy enough for IV to let his mind drift away from his home, his family-- but it's also just as easy to be reminded. Every time he sees a father and son walk past him, his mood darkens for a number of reasons - anger, jealousy - and every time he sees what he assumes are two brothers, what good mood is shifting into longing, sadness, and ever still, jealousy.

This day out of all the others is no different, casting glares at passing people as he walks around and tries to keep his mood high, but the homesickness is stronger today than it has been. He misses his brothers, and to some extent, his father, and despite being a damn good actor any other time, his expression certainly doesn't hide it, and neither does the cracking ground around his feet with every step he takes.

For now, at least. ]

The air around her is pretty wobbly and pink tinged with nervousness - she wants to make a good first impression but clearly she..... lacks public speaking skills and also a filter on her thoughts. Also the way the ground shifts a little underneath her feet throwing her further off balance certainly doesn't help... ]

[ So. Monster attacks. Everyone loves monster attacks, right?

Good because there's a pack of killer seagulls bearing down on everyone near a street food stand at the very edge of town.

Homura had been hoping to get a snack to eat while she explored a little - but alas it is not to be! Amid the shrieks of the diving birds, she lets out a cry of surprise of her own - but despite the nervous way she jumps back and stumbles over the ground (or air - or her own shoes...), a look of determination soon finds its way onto her face. Clenching her teeth, she holds out one hand where an eggshaped purple stone thing manifests and then - in a flash of light and possibly a transformation sequence for those tuning in from home her entire outfit has changed, and she now bears an odd shield on her arm.

But she doesn't stay still for long before she puts her hand on her shield and -- wait, suddenly she's over there, holding a gun with one hand and rubbing her forehead with the other? (A small red mark is there, as though she hit herself in the head with a casing or maybe even the gun itself.) And two or three a fanged bloody seagulls let out death squawks and plummet to the ground with mediocrely aimed bullet holes. (Seriously - none of them are well centered on the body mass of the birds.)

Uh... right then. Well - if you wanted to kill some, don't worry. There are plenty to go around! And if not, well there's that weird girl with the gun over there... ]

[Since getting dumped into this strange world, Kevin has been spending as much of his time as possible avoiding everyone else in it. Now and again someone bullies him into having his newly missing eye looked at, and clucks at him about changing the bandages more often and how he should be off his feet still and so on. But for the most part, it's easy to keep away from people. Nobody wants to go near a man so dour and gloomy that shadows cluster around him where there shouldn't be any shadows at all. So, the former knight spends his time skulking about on the streets with the homeless and their booze, minding his own business.

The thing with cats, though, is they really don't give two craps about humans think of them.

Which is why he's currently staring having a staring match with one such tiny beast, who has settled across from him in the local park and seems content to irritate him simply by existing where he can see it. Kevin does not like cats, not since That Happened, and this is probably what has attracted it to him in the first place. It flicks its tail back and forth, gently, paws curled underneath it, and it stares at Kevin and Kevin stares right back. The cat refuses to lose interest, and Kevin refuses to leave this nice tree he's found to sit under, because if he does the cat has won and that's offensive.

Interrupt? Not even a cat can out-stubborn Kevin Regnard. They're liable to be here all day.]

[ As much as Durbe is missing his home, his people (Nasch's people that he's taking care of, he reminds himself, and when he notices the wilting grass around his feet at the thought, he tries to perk himself up a little with fonder memories than those without Nasch at his side), he's also doing what he can to distract himself, to help others.

It all reminds him of his past, the local villages he would sometimes help out around as a knight, doing labor with the rest of the locals. That reminder is something that makes the Barian smile, and everything seems to brighten up as a result. It's still a bit to get used to, having his emotions on his sleeves (or is it a singular sleeve?), despite being the kind of being that encompasses emotions as it is. Even as he lets out a yelp of pain as he smashes his fingers between two boards though, he listens to the woman nearby chuckle, and Durbe can't keep the small smile off of his face. ]

Human bodies are so fragile; it's strange to get used to.

[ He could shift into his Barian form, but... he doesn't think startling these locals is worth it. ]

[he's set off on a rampage and the entire city is going to be destroyed by his intense emotional waves of rage—haha, no, no, just kidding. that's for another day, perhaps. or later on. though he's certainly close to have that fuse blown. knowing how his anger negatively affects everything, he's been trying to contain it. however, the current situation is as follows:

he had been walking through the town trying to get a better understanding of its layout when he is confronted by a group of younger men. he just stands there, staring down at them questioningly, but when they start saying how he and "those others" have been leeching off of everyone without doing jack shit, a vein starts to throb. as they continue, ominous clouds form around them, both from the group as well as Shizuo. needless to say, his particular cloud is darkening at a much faster pace.

although he's trying very hard to not pick one of them up and throw them, it's much harder to not have his emotions escape out. knowing this, he tries to just brush past them, but no. they had to be dumb and actually grab his arm.

so watch out anyone around him. cracks are starting to form at his feet and—is the air actually crackling?

[ Seeing those cracks just worries her, so she's going to intervene and attempt to make it better! Well, if anyone knows Sanae it's that she could very well make the matter worse. ] Ah-- hey! Leave the unhappy man alone!

[ She thinks he's being harassed. ] He doesn't mean to cause cracks in the ground, I'm sure! Quick, we should all think happy thoughts so that the ground repairs itself and grows flowers!

[ Teamwork! The sad part is that she's uber-serious about this teamwork to repair the ground. ]

[ don't talk—don't make a sound. it's not a rare moment (any more) that korra can be found attempting to meditate, but things have gotten a lot harder lately, and she looks like she's on the edge of snapping. her nose is twitching, as green bushes sprouting drooping, multicolored flowers keep popping up around her and dying within a few minutes. give her only a few minutes longer and the sound of someone else approaching, and she's completely lost it. ]

I can't stay focused on anything with something interrupting me every five minutes!

[ Dealing with people is the last thing on Kaito's mind most of the time. Dealing with people having emotional issues is usually even further from his mind unless they're lucky enough that Kaito can actually stand them. Especially when he has his own issues, like attempting to find a way out. Of course, with this outdated technology, that could be a problem.

So walking past someone having an emotional outburst is not something he wants to do, and yet here he is, happening to bump into the wrong person on edge, making them the first to yell at him. Normal yelling would be easy to take - a slap across the face to bring them back to their senses and he could be done with it. But this time, it doesn't seem appropriate. Not yet, anyway. ]

Calm down. We're all a little stressed here and you're just making the problem worse.

[ Of course, the man doesn't seem to take that well at all, and Kaito actually cringes a little at the rising volume of his voice. He just had to go out for a walk, didn't he? ]

[He wonders if this is what Vulcans feel like all the time: tired, and utterly fed up with everyone and their bloody emotions. But that's irritation, isn't it, that's an emotion, and Vulcans don't feel emotions, so perhaps not. Perhaps they're just serene and superior constantly-- well, bully for them. Julian's no Vulcan; Julian's at his rope's end after only a week.

Some couple had been fighting, and their combined emotional outbursts had ended up cracking the walls in their apartment. Not a big deal, except this was an apartment that had already endured a lot of abuse-- and this was the final straw. The walls buckled, cracked, crumbled; seven people were injured. And who had to deal with it? Not them, no, just him-- Julian Bashir, medic.

Not that he minds helping the injured. But he rather wishes the two idiots who caused the mess would at least help clean it up.

Right now he's helping straighten out a broken arm, working with medical equipment that's hopelessly outdated.]

It certainly is irritating to deal with this without so much as being able to bring someone to obtain an x-ray, but thankfully the way that emotion manifests not outwardly onto the environment. Her movements are simply more precise and a bit more uncaring towards the patients.

That's another one who's good to go. Casually to the other medic as she lets the patient off, ] At the very least, they don't use leeches here. [ She. Thinks. ]

Well, it wasn't unusual for him to be sucked into doing some sort of task. It was almost like being at home, though it wasn't like he was like at home in the sense that there weren't as many incidents for "detective" work.

Currently, he was delivering a box with directions written on a slip of paper at the top. He's not paying too much attention where he's going, which...would help the problem he's having currently, if he was.

He's kind of lost.]

Maybe next time I should ask for some clearer directions...

[His words come out under his breath as he stops, looking around the area as if to figure out where he should be going. While he knew the general layout of the place by now...badly written directions would probably even get him lost at home.

...Now what? Maybe he should go back and talk to the person who'd sent him on this wild goose chase in the first place.]

I must say, I'm not particularly impressed with the management of this community. In a place such as this, mediation and restraint are as important as ever, and yet people and emotions both run wild and unchecked. Of course, that's on top of the banditry and vigilantes.

No, if we are to make any progress here, then I don't believe we can rely on the Verens government. We will need a leader of our own, after which we will be able to organize and fight the negative forces that threaten us both physically and spiritually.

And if nobody else is both interested in and qualified for the position, then...

Miko is pretty much never seen without her signature earmuffs, aside from right now, as she sits at the edge of the island, looking out at the wasteland below. As soon as she isn't alone, regardless of how quietly they approach, Miko puts her earmuffs back on before standing and turning to face her guest.]

It's pleasant, isn't it? Getting away from the bustle of the city every once in a while.

Prompt A:
[ It all started as an attempt to practice his firebending-- nothing more. This was his first practice since arriving here, to be exact, and he had made sure to find a small secluded area away from the main street and any buildings. Everything had been fine and dandy for the first fifteen minutes or so. It was reassuring to know that his bending abilities were still in working order.

At the first sign of frustration, however, his practice time had quickly deteriorated. To his credit, this was a difficult move he was attempting to perfect, a series of short small bursts of flame that he should be able to sustain for more than five seconds. His stamina is having some trouble, and with each failed attempt, his mood is souring, brow furrowing in frustration.

Unfortunately for Zuko, this is manifesting in the form of big, plump stormclouds that follow him around wherever he might move, pouring cold rain on top of him and his little parade, extinguishing whatever he's managed to conjure up. After the third time this happens, he yells loudly, bringing both hands to his now-wet face and stomping off. ]

Will you just leave me alone?! GO AWAY!

[ That, of course, doesn't help, and he's treated to a fresh shower.

Wet cats have looked happier than he does. ]

[ ... Guess who's been watching this like a weirdo? A young sea witch. Who is very amused by all this, but finally feels it'd be good to, well, approach him-- ]

Uh, you know, it's your emotions that are the problem with your magic. If you calm down, you should be fine...

[ She'd had a bit of uh, trouble at first, too. Mainly with accidentally dropping exploding anchors on a house, but that's a story for another time. ]

Zelos Wilder | Tales of Symphonia

[Prompt A + B-2 -- Someone can either interact with him in the city or while fighting a monster!]

[Zelos slowly walks through Verens, watching people go about their daily routines. Wherever people may be, Zelos is sure to be in an area where it is less crowded. He has to be careful about how his emotions affect the area around him, not wanting to be an open book for others to read. He was used to being an expert in concealing his emotions but Empatheias is a place where everything can be clearly seen, a fact that Zelos does not appreciate.

With each step he took, the ground has a little bit of a frost to it. The air around him is cold and whoever approaches him may feel a slight chill in the air enough to draw a cold breath. Zelos' attempt at hiding anything is to keep everything frozen within him. Even so, Zelos will have a smile on his face regardless. He'll even hum to himself, just not loud enough to draw attention to himself.]

[In an attempt to work off his emotions, Zelos took on the creature that was causing havoc in the farms.]

[ Somehow, for some reason or another, your character has been roped into an afternoon tea date with Miwako, and she couldn't be happier they're here.

And why wouldn't she be happy? She's got a new friend, and just as important, she's got a delicious chocolate parfait in front of her. Miwako is a colorful sight just by herself, but here, one would have to be blind to not see just how happy she is. Glittery sparkles surrounded their table, the previously barren rosebushes surrounding the cafe slowly blossoming. Every now and then, a bird or two will land on the table, chirping happily and simply watching the two patrons.

She's all smiles today, curiously looking over to the opposite side of the table. ]

What did you get? It looks delicious! [ Oh, she wants to try that too... ]

[Well Msyu really has no trouble being in this unknown place. The little asset is floating around as she inspects the different stalls around the small market. A curious look adorns her face, large green eyes trying to take in everything at once.

Too many thoughts cross her mind...and unfortunately she might just be loudly broadcasting some of those thoughts without realizing it. Not like she really cares, nope, no time for that. This world is nothing like hers and she can’t help it as her curiosity gets the better of her. Seeming to almost vibrate with excitement, the little guardian is completely unaware of the heat that seems to emanate from her body. Her skin glows the slightest bit and with each new discovery that heat seems become a little stronger.

Msyu however is too busy looking through things as she picks up a weird looking fruit. The blue color contrasts heavily with the red that adorns her skin, reminding her of that weird clown asset. That doesn't stop her from taking a bite of it.

The taste explodes on her tongue and eyes go impossible wide.

Minako was an ace at taking lemons and making lemonade. Whatever curve balls life threw at her, she continued to smile, sometimes carelessly. For many years, her goal was to serve the Moon Princess as a warrior, and that was going to be her future. Now, for the first time in a long time, Minako found herself utterly alone. No family, no friends. At least when she had been fighting as Sailor V, Artemis had been around to give her advice. She was homesick, and desperately missed her girls.

At the same time, there was a part of Minako that felt selfishly free. She was in a place where she could meet new people, and perhaps fall in love! While she was worried about Usagi, she was excited to have new opportunities to play around with. As long as Minako was in Empatheias, she was going to make the most of it. Because who knew when she would have to get back to her old life.

She had been there for several months, and she had been able to buy a new dress at last. Minako practically skipped down the street while wearing it, paying no attention to the flowering buds and chirping birds she left behind her. It was like she was straight out of some Disney movie... Anyone could tell how happy she was from a mile away.
