— HMD: MAY —

All right guys, here's our first ever gamewide HMD. Here are a few things you should know as well as the rules and guidelines to how to participate in this HMD.

  • Optional. This is not a mandatory HMD. You do not have to participate, however we highly encourage those who have questions or want tips to comment.
  • Public + Optional Anon + IP Logging On. Due to the results of the previous poll, we've decided to try and compromise. This is open to the public, so those outside of the game can give critique. There is no requirement to join the community. Anonymous commenting is turned on however IP logging remains on and players can say whether they want anonymous comments or not. If a player has requested only logged-in critique, please respect their wishes. Not everyone is comfortable with anonymous.
  • Those giving crit: be polite and constructive. This HMD is to help players improve their playing and thereby improve the experience of everyone. It is also to help players point out things that might be questionable. Sometimes there are legitimate reasons for it, and sometimes it's a misinterpretation or clear mistake. Regardless, your crit should be helping the other player see their mistake and/or offer ways to help improve. You can be frank, you can be blunt, but you should not be disrespectful. Crit can be a hard pill to swallow, and while you shouldn't have to sugarcoat it, you can try to make it more palatable. In addition, try to provide actual examples of what you're talking about. It will help facilitate the discussion and give a better idea of your point.
  • Those receiving crit: be open-minded and receptive. Receiving critique can be very difficult, but if you're participating in this HMD, then that must mean you are prepared for that possibility. If you receive critique that doesn't make sense, do not be defensive. Instead ask questions and try to clear up misunderstandings. In addition, be open to what people have to say. Sometimes we have blinders on when playing our characters and may not see problems that others do. Be willing to compromise as well. Maybe you don't agree with everything that is said, but there could be helpful nuggets in there. If there are things you are specifically worried about, you should include it in your comment. This could help others help you.
  • Going Anon. If a player has opted for anonymous critique, it should be written no different than if you were giving it while logged in. All of the above rules apply. Basically think of it this way: if you wouldn't say it while logged in, then don't say it anon. The only real reason to allow anonymous here is to help those who want to give meaningful crit, but are shy or afraid for whatever reason. It is not to be abused.
  • Monitoring. We will be monitoring this post, and if any harassment is found, it will be immediately screened and frozen. Any repeat offenders will be banned. Any anonymous abuse will result in anonymous turned off. If there is anything to report, contact us.

If you understand how this HMD works, fill out the appropriate form and comment to this post. The questions should help players have some structure and formulate how and what to write what they want.

RECEIVING CRIT:
Player:
Character(s):
Personal HMD? If you have a personal HMD, you can link to that as well.
Anon allowed? Yes or No
Concerns: Any concerns you have that you'd like others to try and help you with. Is there something about your characterization that you feel off? Do you wish to improve your writing? Do you need tips how to be more engaging?
Anything else: Anything else you'd like to mention, such as any notes about the character or canon material that you feel others should be aware of. For example, if your character is from one version and not another and how that might affect characterization.

GIVING CRIT:
Main issues: What main issues do you have with this character or player? Are they leaning toward OOC? Are they forgetting to behave a certain way? Are they hard to tag?
Advice/Suggestions: What advice or suggestions do you have? This could either be related to the above field or completely separate.
Positive Notes: What positive things can you say that the player should continue to do or build on? This isn't a "buttpat" field, but positive criticism can be just as constructive and can help build confidence. There should be no "pure gushing" here. Positive criticism can also alleviate any stings in the previous fields.
Anything else: Anything else you feel worth mentioning.

Whether we continue with this format or try for something different next time will depend on feedback received on a later date, so consider this a test run.

The mod/game critique thread can be found here.

I really like how involved the mods are with player plots and posts in this game. Most games don't/aren't able to pay as much attention to everyone individually, but I think it really improves the game and also helps me keep up with things LMF

ALSO: NOT ACTUALLY CRIT BUT I THOUGHT NOW WOULD BE A GOOD A TIME AS ANY: what are the mods/the playerbase's thoughts on allowing OCs? I know that they can be intimidating to process, because you have to be alert for the poorly written ones, but some of my favorite CR of all time has been with OCs and I know at least a few of us would definitely app some in.

Player: Raaj
Character(s): Tiz Arrior
Personal HMD? here
Anon allowed? Yes
Concerns: I've been a little reserved with Tiz since I wasn't sure what direction b2nd was going to take for him, but now that that's less of an issue I don't think there's anything? Which doesn't mean that he's following his B2nd characterization, there's already some significant difference because of the different circumstances he's in. More like Bravely Default had a confusing ending with Tiz, so I was worried that some of the guesses I had to make in playing him would turn out completely off.
Anything else: Mm, can't think of anything at the moment!

I did think of something! Namely, please feel free to crit even if you're canonblind. I know that Bravely Default is a canon that not too many have played or are still in the process of playing, so general writing/keeping interest advice might be more applicable. (Or if you're playing and you think something is off with Tiz but you're not sure, go ahead and mention it.)

Personal HMD? bwoom
Anon allowed? sure!
Concerns: I want to know if my Noire is engaging, mostly - I know that most of y'alls are canon-blind but I want to know how to improve my dialogue, hooks, and stuff like that. Noire is one of my favorite muses, but she doesn't come as easily to me as some of my others, so I'd love input!
Anything else: I know I have been slower than actual hell this month and I'm really sorry - it was the Baltimore unrest at first, then finals up until like, last week. tbh I should have taken a longer hiatus but I did not because idk why?? ANYWAY yeah.

Personal HMD? Some characters have ones available on their journals
Anon allowed? Tentatively yes, but this may change if anon crit goes the way it usually does
Concerns: Have I been slacking on Princess Celestia's representative job? I have not been specifically seeking things out to do with this, but I do worry that I'm not accomplishing as much as I should with her in that position.

Character(s): Silver (this journal!)
Personal HMD? Right here!
Anon allowed? Yes
Concerns: I've been playing Silver as a little more open than he'd like over the crystals since it's telepathic communication- he's good at filtering his words, but his thoughts not so much. I'm a little worried that I might be overdoing that, but it's not a huge deal.

I could probably stand to be a little more consistent with my tagging but I don't think it's a huge problem so much as something to look out for, so. Yeah!
Anything else: My personal HMD has IP logging off if that's your gig. Other than that I can't really think of anything! Go ahead.
hachimaki: (Gasp at my bloody crimes.)

[personal profile] hachimaki 2015-05-27 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the whole point of the telepathic communication (and game itself) is for the characters to be a little more unchecked in their thoughts and establish deeper connections of CR more quickly, so I think you're fine on that front! I don't know the character so I can't offer anything extra but my guy's pretty hindered in that way too and I use it for the same purpose. It's just bending a little to help them acclimate into the environment and I think it's perfectly fine.

I always really enjoy your tags and I think your consistency is seriously great. Or maybe I don't notice because I'm slower than you but it's a pretty evenly-paced game so I think you're good.

Character(s): Roxas
Personal HMD? Here
Anon allowed? If you must but I prefer non-anon
Concerns: I've seen comments that he's bland, so I'm looking for ways to make him more dynamic and involved.
Anything else:
I am aware of potential issues such as being slow, not tagging out enough, and I'm probably due for a canon review as well. All of these are in various stages of being worked on.
hachimaki: (Why'd you get dolled up for a suicide?)

[personal profile] hachimaki 2015-05-27 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't stalked yours much, I just thought I'd come in with some advice for being less bland; I used to RP from KH a ton myself.

The main problem with Roxas from post-KH2 (especially without tons of canonmates) is that he sort of has all of his problems resolved so there's nothing for characters from other canons to get involved with. He's rejoined with Sora and his important people and at that point most just try to RP him like he's just trying to kind of live the life of the average teenager the way he did in the fake Twilight Town, but that definitely isn't the case. You have to keep in mind how much of Sora he has in him and go from there. I think he'd be out there looking for Heartless, trying to find a keyhole, trying to protect people from harm, and getting really involved in events. You have a ton of play on the whole Nobody vs Emotions thing here that can get really introspective and deep.

There's also the fact to consider that he's basically only like a year or two old and what experiences he does have he's either forgotten (Xion), fake (Twilight Town), or Sora's. I think it'd be really important for him to be out there experiencing things, going on adventures, learning about life, and this could be a really fun and engaging aspect to play. He'll ask people tons of questions about their lives and be really gung-ho about getting his hands dirty.

Roxas is also probably the most fun and engaging when he is in Twilight Town and not, you know, dealing with the morality crisis of Organization XIII, so I'd advise not taking his Teen Angst too seriously. You have to differentiate him from Sora and Ventus though so don't make him too happy-go-lucky. That isn't to say you can't have serious threads, but there's definitely the need to remember that he's just kind of a big dumb dork who isn't too proud to strap on velcro bubbles and go to town with a bat. He's definitely got Sora's competitiveness and would get involved in banter and sports.

As far as critique goes, I noticed you don't seem to use "too" correctly? In this thread in both of these sentences: "And I was wondering if I could find one here to." and "Yeah, I was thinking that to.", this to should be "too". Anytime you can replace it with the word "also", it's two o's. I thought maybe it was an oversight but since you did it twice in a row, I thought I'd mention it.

I hope that helps!

Character(s): Junko Enoshima!
Personal HMD? Here! You can leave crit here or there, either's fine!
Anon allowed? Yup!
Concerns: This might sound like a silly thing to worry about, but I do wonder if I'm either doing too much with her or at the same time not enough. She tends to be way more...active than I originally intended on (not that I was intending on being inactive), and I do occasionally wonder if that's rubbing people the wrong way, or if I'm still not doing enough because she tends to be very um...involved with everything in her canon from what we know.

My other major concern is sort of how she comes across, I guess. Her personality is basically a giant despair filled mess in canon, and I think I'm doing okay with that, but there's always stuff I could have missed or could be doing wrong, so if there's any major mistakes you've noticed, please let me know and I can try and fix those or do better or any of that.

Anything else: I'm aware of how much I typo/html fail, and I'm trying to work on that. It's mainly an issue where I write up a tag, think it's better than it is and submit without checking it as well as I should have. So I'm trying to be more thorough with checking things.
spiritofjustice: Please don't take without permission! (Plead Innocent)

[personal profile] spiritofjustice 2015-05-28 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hilariously canonblind, so I can't comment on what her presence is like compared to canon, but... I really like how active Junko is. I know it can be tricky to play an antagonist and have them be involved with things (trust me, I know), but considering we've also got a buttload of heroes who are very active and involved, we kinda need the antagonistic presence. Balance is the whole point of this game anyway, right?

If you're stuck between 'I wonder if I'm doing too much' and 'I wonder if I'm not doing enough', chances are that you're doing exactly the right amount.

Personal HMD? here with IP Logging off and willingness to screen/unscreen!
Anon allowed? yep!
Concerns: I go for a few days without tagging sometimes and I haven't heard any complaints, but if you'd like to lay those against me here I can try to work on it. The length of tags I receive from this game varies a lot -- some want quickfire conversation and some want lots of introspection -- so I try to do my best to match what my partner's giving me but sometimes I worry I go too much one way or the other! Takasugi's a pretty selfish, assholey dude who dismisses people quickly but I also try to keep a thread interesting to the other player by having him ask questions and get involved so I hope his generally lack of appeal doesn't make things too boring for others! ...that's it i think...
Anything else: This game makes me happy.

Player: Laena
Character(s): Alvin ([personal profile] opportunitycosts); Shizuo Heiwajima ([personal profile] hatesviolence); Hak ([personal profile] raijuu)
Personal HMD? one; two; three
Anon allowed? Yep

Concerns: Hoo boy. Lately I feel like I'm either on a good roll in terms of voices, or I'm hitting some kind of stale streak that makes me want to pound my head against the keyboard. Recent hiatus has helped a great deal, as well as hitting the books for inspiration. But it's been a really long time since anyone's ever given me critique and I'd really appreciate any suggestions or tips for any of my guys.

Alvin I feel pretty okay on, but I always feel like I could do more with him. I've also been playing him a couple of years now in different scenarios with varying degrees of development, so it's very possible that I've grown "too used" to him and have missed key things. Please do point those things out!

Shizuo is one of the ones I feel uncertain about. On the one hand, he's a quiet guy by nature so he can definitely be a bit on the more "mundane, boring" side, but I also think I might be being too cautious in not having him explode in anger. Now that I think about it, I honestly can't remember when he had a real "on screen" anger fallout. He's been working on it and the setting lends to that, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be mad! Engh. I definitely don't want him flipping out on any person's character, though, at least not without warning. The other thing is I don't want to overdo it since I never like overplaying certain traits (even if he really does get pissed off easily). So any suggestions about how to go about that would be greatly appreciated, as well as ways to make dialogue conversations be more engaging. Unlike Alvin or Hak, he's very...simple and while I'm usually enjoying it, I wonder about the other side. I try as much as I can while being IC, but I don't want anyone to feel like they're having to carry the conversation because of it (because that's definitely no fun). So anyone who has threaded with him and found it difficult, please tell me! It would really help me figure out how to better improve and I would love different perspectives.

Hak is still a new guy for me and it's been a little touch and go in settling into his voice. I feel more comfortable now, but I also feel like I'm missing opportunities or may have him respond one way and then think, "Wait, shoot, maybe he should have acted like this 8|a" However I'm not sure if that's my uncertainty speaking or if I really am doing something wrong.

And finally, I'm pretty much open to anything else that could be improved. Hopefully I'm giving enough content to work with, but if I've been slacking lately or giving too much introspection, please let me know. I know I can tl;dr ah ha ha ha... I think Shizuo gets the bulk of it since he's the quiet one and I'm trying to compensate for his shorter responses. It's been an interesting balancing act.

Anything else: Due to all the moving going on, I've been deliberately cutting back and trying not to overextend myself (because I did that recently and that was bad). This kind of affects Alvin most out of my guys since he could be doing more but I'm holding off until things are settled. I need to do more logging things, too—I think I stuck to the network for the most part this month since it would be easier to keep up during this time. But that's something I'm also keeping in mind for once things settle. I think that's it.
hachimaki: (Believe it's all been worth the fight.)

[personal profile] hachimaki 2015-05-27 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly now I feel bad because Shizuo and Takasugi look like they could have chill CR when Takasugi is exactly the kind of person that could make Shizuo flip easily. HAHAHAHA. AH WELL, THE NIGHT IS YOUNG, WHO KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN.

Since the game itself is kind of leading him in a little more mundane way, I think you need to flip things and actually look for situations that will make him snap now. It is an intrinsic part of his character and it needs to be showcased just as much as his "I just want the bartender life, leave me alone" desires. He's not a normal guy, so there needs to be some kind of tension between those two sides. Obviously having him wig out on everyone isn't any good, but there are plenty of IC warnings that can let the other character/player know he's getting hotheaded if they don't want to play that out (snapping cigarette/clenched fists+teeth, etc). Making it happen in one tag would just be rude and sudden, but I think you're a capable enough player to parse this out well.

Concerns: Ehhhh I've been worried for a while that I'm difficult to play with, because I feel like I'm struggling to get Haru to interact with others. Part of that is definitely because of the character but I can't put all of it on him, haha. I'm in-general a really anxious roleplayer and I have trouble getting myself out of ruts if my brain's decided that it's just because I suck. If there's anything you think I can do to improve, even if it's just something small, please tell me. I really genuinely appreciate constructive criticism, even if I don't seem like I have that sort of personality. Concerns: I know I haven't been around long with Yuri, but anything you have based on what you've seen so far. He's a character that I kind of just do 'first thing that comes to mind with' and sometimes his humor is a little off in terms of voice. He's a simple character and yet he's complex at the same time, so anything you see that might be off, let me know. I'd greatly appreciate it.
Anything else: I know I'm very sporadic with tags, so I'm trying to get better with that. Job hunt has priority right now and it's stressing me out, so I apologize. Which is the primary reason why I cut my more difficult characters because I just don't have the time to devote to them anymore.

Anything else: I do a lot of my tagging via mobile thanks to work and other obligations, and I haven't really been getting all the notifications that I should be getting because of hotmail/dreamwidth shenanigans. Personal HMD? For Sanae and for Naomi.
Anon allowed? Yes!

Concerns: I'm mostly wondering how I'm doing with characterization: how they may or may not be engaging, interesting, in character, and so on. Naomi's dialog can come off as a bit stiff, and Sanae has that whole nice-but-uninteresting hole she can fall into. Sanae in particular has received a lot more development towards a more calmer attitude (regarding youkai), so any tips or suggestions on how she might be progressing would be helpful. I've also been on the slow side recently due to RL obligations, too, so for these past two months I haven't been as active and tagging out. I'm trying to manage time more to keep up with threads, though. Any suggestions are welcome!

Personal HMD?
Anon allowed? Sure
Concerns: Well... I think he's been too communicative? In canon, he's less prone to talk about the past or speak his mind about stuff, but he's done it in a couple of occasions here. My IC justification is that he just got taken from the part where he confessed his secrets to his friends, so he was in a bit of elation and became a bit more sincere, now that he knows it'll be fine. Still, castmates or people who know him, let me know if I might be pushing it too far off. He wants to slowly stop hiding, and he sees no reason not to talk (within limits, he's not going to open that much) about similar experiences with people from other worlds if it helps them.
(And regarding Hak vs. Soo-won, he actually did drop prudence on purpose and think "fuck this shit" as he's the only one who knows how nasty it could get. But if you think it's too OOC, please tell me and I'll calm it down.)
Anything else: I've been pretty slow lately because of killer flu and fic writing, so I apologize.

Anon allowed? Yes for now.
Concerns: Definitely concerned on if my tags/posts are interesting enough. Also a bit concerned on how well I'm doing in general. Yes, I'm playing an antagonist, but one with no motives here besides finding Kor a way home since that would accomplish his overall goal. I know I definitely don't get much of a chance to show that his morality is very abnormal so maybe suggestions on how I could show the side of him that allowed him to think that destroying a whole planet was a perfectly fine thing, yet balance the fact that he does want to be liked by others.
Anything else: My work schedule changed so I'm having to adjust to being awake different hours which always screws with me and I know my tagging has been sporadic. That should resolve itself in time.
hachimaki: (Heart beats fast watching theirs stop.)

[personal profile] hachimaki 2015-05-28 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think what I've noticed for Creed is that he's very straight-to-business and right now his business is all about the Arehtei. Maybe try to put him in situations that humanizes him? That's a big key for playing villains and getting good, relatable CR anyway. He's still just a dude who has to separate his laundry at the end of the day and is probably going to have foot-in-mouth syndrome at least a few times. Taking villain characters way too seriously is always going to lead to things being too bland imo.

As for showcasing his morality, have him jump into or start metaphorical questions. I'm sure he has his motivations for what he did and he doesn't have to directly talk about them, but discussing human nature, morality, and philosophy itself is a good way to get the ball rolling there. Open-ended posts are a good tactic to get the ball rolling.

Concerns: If she's too nice, if she's not nice enough, if her development's felt kind of jerky, general consistency... Also if my tags are hard to respond to, or if I don't give enough hooks, or if they're hard to understand--stuff like that!

OOCly, it's been pointed out that I'm a little bad at following through with ideas and threads, and if that's been your experience with me I'd like to know. It's something I'm going to be working on as I can.
Anything else: Nnnnot really. There's been some RL issues, so I haven't been tagging as much as or as quickly as I'd like to the past two months.

Concerns: I tend to forget threads, sorry. And lately my activity's been pretty lull. I'd like to get him involved in more player-plots and game-plots, but I worry he doesn't have the CR needed to stick his nose in. I guess I'm just being shy.
Anything else: Not off the top of my head, but if there are other concerns, let me know!

Personal HMD? Here
Anon allowed? Yes
Concerns: Generally, Lu Meng is characterized by his steady and stable nature...which means that he's kinda boring to play off against because he tends to be an advice dispensing machine and nothing else. I'm trying to balance that while exploring different prompts/scenes to bring out other sides of him, so if anyone has any suggestions on how I can make him less boring please let me know!
Anything else: My tag speed has been glacial recently due to a combination of burnout and work hitting me hard at the same time. I'm still trying to hack away at old threads here and there. If I haven't responded to a thread in awhile it doesn't mean that I've dropped it and I will get back to it. I also know I have a difficulty following through with things I've plotted out, so I promise I'll be working on that by being less obsessive over whether I've planned stuff out perfectly because that tends to be my main block when it comes to posting logs.
