TEST DRIVE: JANUARY

— TEST DRIVE: JANUARY —

Welcome to [community profile] empatheias' test drive meme. This test drive is to help interested players test their characters in the game's environment. We've included a few prompts that incorporate specific elements of the game, though you'll find all of them have a lot of leeway for players to get as creative as necessary. Before diving in, here are a few things we'd like to remind everyone about the game in general:

  • Date reminders. Reserves open Friday, December 25th and Applications (Canon | OC) open Friday, January 1st.

  • OC Reminder! Just a quick reminder that original characters are currently allowed. Those interested can also use the test drive. OCs do not need to be reserved.

  • Emotions are key! Empatheias' premise focuses on how anyone's emotions can affect their environment, be it big or small. While not every emotion will cause a reaction, significant ones definitely will. How much effect a character will have will ultimately be up to you, the player. Also, while we're giving a lot of leeway for the test drive, keep in mind that there will be some limits in the actual game.

  • Everyone has an amulet. All characters have a unique amulet that is specialized for them. It will contain all of their emotion drops and it serves as the network device. Remember, communication is telepathic. Otherwise, it works basically the same.

  • Assume the character is already in the game. Because "OMG WHERE AM I IS THIS REAL LIFE" threads aren't going to be very helpful in this test drive! Plus those are going to happen in-game, anyway. So to make things easier, just assume that they've been around at least a week or so. Still learning the ropes, but not a complete "first day" experience.

  • First or third person allowed. Your threads can be in either first or third, but we'd advise being flexible about it. Remember, these threads can also be used in your application for samples! Reminder: We only require one sample and it can be done in either format. We have also made a change to our sample requirements, so look over the Applications page!

Now with that out of the way, here are some prompts you guys can work from!

PROMPTS

• Prompt A: How about giving the emotions a try?

• Prompt B: Refer to the Task Board and choose a task your character may be interested in taking up. For this prompt, you could have your character ask for help, already be in the middle of the job, or react to it in some way. Perhaps they were an unfortunate victim or want to create a job countering an existing one. You could even have a prompt making a job request. Creating jobs for the purpose of the test drive is absolutely doable.

• Prompt C: How about giving the amulets a go? Start a telepathic conversation and see how it works. Remember, the amulets are sending out the owner's thoughts so might want to be careful about how the stream of consciousness goes...

• Prompt D: A new card game is sweeping through the streets of Verens: "Magica Ex Arehtei." Players take on the role of an Otherworlder and form battle decks out of minions, monsters, dunamis, and even the Arehtei themselves. It’s insanely complicated in its details, but this hasn’t stopped a seller from handing you a starter deck and all but pushing you into a chair to face an opponent… who may have just been conscripted themselves.

• Prompt E: After a long period of quiet (something about ‘emotional and physical harm to Empatheias’ and ‘manufacturing plush weapons without a Class E(X) license’), toy manufacturers have flooded merchant stalls and storefronts with a new offering, the hyper-cute stuffed Thras. No negative emotions, they promise! Plush Thras is so full of bravery, he’ll inspire anyone who holds him to new heights of courage and valor!

Naturally, magiscience has gone too far, and picking up the doll instills you with vigor, energy, and fearlessness past the point of recklessness.

• Prompt F: Thundersnow! A phenomenon in which a snowstorm is accompanied by lightning and thunder, and not a terribly uncommon one in Empatheias. But today’s thundersnow is more like an apocablizzard -- lighting lashes through the sky and lances down to catch buildings and trees with its fury, all hidden behind whirling sheets of billowing snowflakes that have blanketed the city in a foot of snow with no sign of stopping.

The outside is cold, windy, miserable, and potentially dangerous. Are you trapped in a building you didn’t expect to be in? Or perhaps you’ve joined up with an emergency emotion squad, trying to impose calm or cheer on the raging storm?

• Prompt G: Make your own! It could include lumps of coal or moose.

For your threads, put the Character Name and the Canon in the subject line to help readily identify them. You're also welcome to use more than one prompt for respondents to choose from. If you have any questions or want to brush up on the game information, refer to the Game Information entry. Otherwise, tag around and have fun!

[ Yeah, this card game looks pretty fun, okay! And Leaf's all about fun. Which is why she's all ready to play until the boy says "a girl?" with that tone of surprise.

And now she's all ready to beat him. (Look, she has a competitive streak, okay? So sue her.) So she sits down confidently across from him, chin raised as she picks up her deck and shuffles it. ]
I'm Leaf. And yeah, I'm a girl.

Nice to meet you. [ Because being polite is Cool, okay. ]

who would do that

[personal profile] gottacatch 2015-12-30 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
[ Urgh.

That look... he would know that type of look anywhere, though he's got the feeling it's not entirely due to the game in their hands: there is now a personal vendetta in place. ]

N-nice to meet you too! [ Crap, and is she shuffling without looking, that's so cool... Red looks down to his hands to fumble with his own set, less efficiently and adding another point towards how ridiculous his feels right about now.

At least one of those he can try to fix, looking back over to her, expression still sheepish. ]
Sorry, I didn't mean anything by that. I was just thinking about the last time I played a game like this! Aha, a really long time ago, with this other guy...

[ That got a little mumbly, eyes returning to his deck, but he perks back up. ] Anyway, I bet it'll be a good match!
pokegirl: ([18])

definitely not me

[personal profile] pokegirl 2015-12-30 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[ OH NO. Now she feels bad already. ... I mean, she's not going to tone down her competitiveness, but she'll be nicer about it! ] Oh, I'm sure it will be!

[ And as she starts laying out the cards for the first round, she asks-- ] What's the game you played like it before? Is it from your world?

[personal profile] gottacatch 2015-12-30 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ --she's already putting cards in place? Is that what he should do? He hasn't even read the instructions yet, which he wants to look at, but- ]

Yeah, that's right! [ Answers first. He sits his set down, picking up the booklet now. ] It was a set with the creatures we knew existed back then, and it had a board like this. [ Nodding to the one set out on the table. ] The rules were, uh...something like this?

[ He's... squinting at this book. This sure is a lot of words, and he tries speed-reading through the first page. ...this was not meant for speed-reading.

This is too much like his childhood. ]

[ Boy didn't you even pay attention to the seller a little bit before sitting down??? Yes, he was talking fast, but Leaf's even faster with the questions. She can't help laughing a little as she sees him fumble with the deck, but it all in good spirit, honestly.

Getting up out of her chair, she leans over to point at one of the diagrams on the second page. ]
Just set your cards out kind of like that. I think we can just figure it out after that! Or make it up as we go.

I used to just make up rules for games a lot when I was a kid. My best frie-- I mean. My friend at the... my... jeeze. [ She sits back down with a little huff. ] Whatever. The guy I played with used to be really grumpy about it, but I think it's still fun that way.

[personal profile] gottacatch 2015-12-31 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
[ In his defence, he wasn't expecting to get pulled into a card game!! Also, the booklet is really confusing!! ...and while it's embarrassing to have the person you're meant to be competing against helping you out with the rules, Red only huffs a little to himself, but gives a more clearer: ] Thanks.

[ Thanks for where they're due!! He turns the book over to sit on the table, and starts setting out his cards. ]

The guy I played with wouldn't let me do that. He was the kind who'd sit there saying things to throw you off and make you feel like every play you made was a bad move. [ Maybe with him it was. ] It used to bug me a lot, but I kept playing just so I could beat him.

[ Leaf definitely appreciates that, okay!! Look at the bright smile that Red's getting just because he said thank you. She knows how to appreciate good manners. ] You're welcome!

Our guys sound like they would've really gotten along. [ Seriously. ] They're both grumpy and awful. You did end up beating him one day, right? [ Because beating rude people is important! Yes, Leaf's a nice girl, but not that nice. ]

[personal profile] gottacatch 2016-01-05 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
No. [ Wouldn't that be the perfect ending to the story, and Red even hesitates to admit it. ] He got bored of it before I could and we never played again after that.

[ Because that was the type of guy he was, and when his opponent was too hasty and easy to rile up, it led to too many easy victories.

Regardless, there was a nice note Red could finish that on, eyes scanning the board to make sure it looked good. Yep. ]

But I got to take him on in a different competition later on, and we had a good battle where I was finally able to beat him. He took it well.

[ Though Red had been worried for a second--but it was a nice thought to remember, the way that Green had finally acknowledged him after the years of looking down on him. There isn't a trace of gloating in his words. ]
