TEST DRIVE: JANUARY

— TEST DRIVE: JANUARY —

Welcome to [community profile] empatheias' test drive meme. This test drive is to help interested players test their characters in the game's environment. We've included a few prompts that incorporate specific elements of the game, though you'll find all of them have a lot of leeway for players to get as creative as necessary. Before diving in, here are a few things we'd like to remind everyone about the game in general:

  • Date reminders. Reserves open Friday, December 25th and Applications (Canon | OC) open Friday, January 1st.

  • OC Reminder! Just a quick reminder that original characters are currently allowed. Those interested can also use the test drive. OCs do not need to be reserved.

  • Emotions are key! Empatheias' premise focuses on how anyone's emotions can affect their environment, be it big or small. While not every emotion will cause a reaction, significant ones definitely will. How much effect a character will have will ultimately be up to you, the player. Also, while we're giving a lot of leeway for the test drive, keep in mind that there will be some limits in the actual game.

  • Everyone has an amulet. All characters have a unique amulet that is specialized for them. It will contain all of their emotion drops and it serves as the network device. Remember, communication is telepathic. Otherwise, it works basically the same.

  • Assume the character is already in the game. Because "OMG WHERE AM I IS THIS REAL LIFE" threads aren't going to be very helpful in this test drive! Plus those are going to happen in-game, anyway. So to make things easier, just assume that they've been around at least a week or so. Still learning the ropes, but not a complete "first day" experience.

  • First or third person allowed. Your threads can be in either first or third, but we'd advise being flexible about it. Remember, these threads can also be used in your application for samples! Reminder: We only require one sample and it can be done in either format. We have also made a change to our sample requirements, so look over the Applications page!

Now with that out of the way, here are some prompts you guys can work from!

PROMPTS

• Prompt A: How about giving the emotions a try?

• Prompt B: Refer to the Task Board and choose a task your character may be interested in taking up. For this prompt, you could have your character ask for help, already be in the middle of the job, or react to it in some way. Perhaps they were an unfortunate victim or want to create a job countering an existing one. You could even have a prompt making a job request. Creating jobs for the purpose of the test drive is absolutely doable.

• Prompt C: How about giving the amulets a go? Start a telepathic conversation and see how it works. Remember, the amulets are sending out the owner's thoughts so might want to be careful about how the stream of consciousness goes...

• Prompt D: A new card game is sweeping through the streets of Verens: "Magica Ex Arehtei." Players take on the role of an Otherworlder and form battle decks out of minions, monsters, dunamis, and even the Arehtei themselves. It’s insanely complicated in its details, but this hasn’t stopped a seller from handing you a starter deck and all but pushing you into a chair to face an opponent… who may have just been conscripted themselves.

• Prompt E: After a long period of quiet (something about ‘emotional and physical harm to Empatheias’ and ‘manufacturing plush weapons without a Class E(X) license’), toy manufacturers have flooded merchant stalls and storefronts with a new offering, the hyper-cute stuffed Thras. No negative emotions, they promise! Plush Thras is so full of bravery, he’ll inspire anyone who holds him to new heights of courage and valor!

Naturally, magiscience has gone too far, and picking up the doll instills you with vigor, energy, and fearlessness past the point of recklessness.

• Prompt F: Thundersnow! A phenomenon in which a snowstorm is accompanied by lightning and thunder, and not a terribly uncommon one in Empatheias. But today’s thundersnow is more like an apocablizzard -- lighting lashes through the sky and lances down to catch buildings and trees with its fury, all hidden behind whirling sheets of billowing snowflakes that have blanketed the city in a foot of snow with no sign of stopping.

The outside is cold, windy, miserable, and potentially dangerous. Are you trapped in a building you didn’t expect to be in? Or perhaps you’ve joined up with an emergency emotion squad, trying to impose calm or cheer on the raging storm?

• Prompt G: Make your own! It could include lumps of coal or moose.

For your threads, put the Character Name and the Canon in the subject line to help readily identify them. You're also welcome to use more than one prompt for respondents to choose from. If you have any questions or want to brush up on the game information, refer to the Game Information entry. Otherwise, tag around and have fun!
flowerclip: It isn't even big enough to make fun of. It's so small that it's like a disability. (No seriously stop! I feel bad for him.)

Not at all! It's far too hot there. I think the whole country would panic if it got this cold! [She rubs her hands together and blinks owlishly at him at the question. Huh?? Couldn't he tell? Maybe he was from some place without an Australia? This whole different worlds and times things was still making her head spin, but she answers him readily anyhow.]

I'm from Australia! It's below Indonesia, and the Philippines? [It was colonized because Britain lost the American colonies? THANKS AMERICA.] Does any of that ring a bell...?
workingon3: (Shout it from the rooftops)

[personal profile] workingon3 2015-12-27 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yeah you can personally thank Laurens for that, too. He's even still wearing his lieutenant colonel army uniform, though it does have rather a lot of small holes and frays.

His face lights up with excitement.]

Oh, yeah! I've heard of Australia. Never met anyone from there before though. Your English is really good! I've heard the wildlife there is unlike anything anywhere else, is that true?
flowerclip: I just really wanted those mozzarella sticks. (I'm sorry I tried to stab you)

[While Petunia recognizes it as a military uniform, she can't quite place when or where--American, she assumes, given his own accent, but that doesn't mean too much to her. Either way she pins him as "probably not government" and that makes him Okay in her books. She just looks amused. Her English is good?] Well, that's thanks to Britain, of course. [She could be bitter, but she won't. She will refrain.]

Oh, yes! You've never see a kangaroo then, yeah? They're really big and have pouches on their fronts to carry their young. They hop on their back feet and they're so strong! They'll box with you, you know? There are spiders the size of my head too-- not even exaggerating! [Okay maybe a little. She laughs a little and smiles] Oh, maybe there's a book in here somewhere?

You're-- American, right? [She eyes his uniform curiously now] Did you come right from a war...? That's awful...

[Congratulations, Petunia, you've discovered one of his favorite topics- nature. He's now grinning ear to ear, excited to learn about these new critters.]

I hope there's a book! I really wanna see what these, what did you call them? Kingaroos? I haveta see what they look like now. The spiders seem terrifying though. Do they bite many people?

[The remark about him coming from a war earns a laugh.]

Yeah, seems the British are responsible for more than just your English skills. I was actually mid-battle when I ended up here. Those redcoats should count themselves lucky they didn't really have to deal with me.
flowerclip: if you're not good at it. (drinking is only a problem)

i had to google australian spiders for this thread I've made a Mistake

[personal profile] flowerclip 2015-12-27 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Kangaroos! They looks a little like rabbits, I suppose. But they're taller than me! Actually, I think the red kangaroo is probably even taller than you when it's standing up straight. [They're like 6'7'' what the fuck Australia.]

The spiders are the worst... Funnel-spider bites can kill someone in 15 minutes if you're really unlucky! And there's the whistling spiders-- we also call them "bird-eating spiders" because-- Well. The name kind of gives it away, right? [Seriously Australia what the fuck.] But those aren't actually dangerous to people. I don't think I've heard of anyone dying of a whistling spider bite.

[Honestly it the comment of 'redcoats' that clues her in. Sure she's heard it in other contexts, but she can't remember the last time she's seen British officers wearing those uniforms outside of guard duties or parade uniforms or something.] Oh! That war! [Petunia hesitates, finding herself at something of an impasse. Does she say anything about the war? Does he know what's going to happen? If she doesn't say anything he's bound to find out sooner or later, and the more she thinks about this the more she's starting to panic a little.]

Um, uh... The Revolution, right? Even I've heard of it... [She trails off uncertainly.]
workingon3: (What time is it?)

oh noooooo D: Try not to have nightmares

[personal profile] workingon3 2015-12-28 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
[If you could only see the mental image he has right now for a kangaroo... John is imagining an actual giant rabbit with bright red fur standing on its back legs. He knows that's probably not what they actually look like, but he's amused by this mental image anyway.]

Australia seems like a dangerous place. Giant boxing rabbits and spiders that'll kill you in a quarter of an hour. And here I thought brown recluses were bad.

So word of the Revolution's gotten all the way over there? [He's not gonna lie, that actually makes him proud. John lets out a short celebratory "ohhhhhh!" and laughs.] I hope you've heard good things about our side of it, at least?
flowerclip: (I bet he comes in French.)

IT WAS WORTH IT... Your Laurens is A+

[personal profile] flowerclip 2015-12-28 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Petunia can't help but laugh, and her happy mood (possibly combined with his own) seems to be having a nice effect on keeping the area warm at least. Hurray for emotion powers! Hopefully he'll never have to face down kangaroos and giant spiders at least...

Despite her initial worry about it all, she can't help but smile at his enthusiasm. This isn't the place for her own bitter feelings regarding governments and the crown, so she just nods happily.
] Oh, yes! Everyone's sure America will win. Britain doesn't stand a chance!

When you Americans set your minds to something, it usually gets done, no matter what. So no matter how bleak it may seem, I have no doubt you guys will come out the winners. [It's said with the utmost conviction, though Petunia might be cheating a little since, you know, she knows.]
workingon3: (I'm John Laurens in the place to be)

aaaaaaa thank youuuu <3

[Oh he likes this girl, which is saying something as most of his friends tend to be guys. His grin widens and it's possible the light in the room brightens a bit as well.]

You certainly know your stuff, Miss Elkwood! We've actually been able to turn the tides a bit lately. Not that I ever had any doubts a'course, but... well you know.

[Things were pretty bleak there for a while.]

...But back to these kangaroos. Are they like, everywhere? Are they kept as pets like normal sized rabbits?
