Welcome to

empatheias' test drive meme. This test drive is to help interested players test their characters in the game's environment. We've included a few prompts that incorporate specific elements of the game, though you'll find all of them have a lot of leeway for players to get as creative as necessary. Before diving in, here are a few things we'd like to remind everyone about the game in general:

Date reminders. Reserves open Tuesday, August 25th and Applications open Tuesday, September 1st.
Emotions are key! Empatheias' premise focuses on how anyone's emotions can affect their environment, be it big or small. While not every emotion will cause a reaction, significant ones definitely will. How much effect a character will have will ultimately be up to you, the player. Also, while we're giving a lot of leeway for the test drive, keep in mind that there will be some limits in the actual game.
Everyone has an amulet. All characters have a unique amulet that is specialized for them. It will contain all of their emotion drops and it serves as the network device. Remember, communication is telepathic. Otherwise, it works basically the same.
Assume the character is already in the game. Because "OMG WHERE AM I IS THIS REAL LIFE" threads aren't going to be very helpful in this test drive! Plus those are going to happen in-game, anyway. So to make things easier, just assume that they've been around at least a week or so. Still learning the ropes, but not a complete "first day" experience.
First or third person allowed. Your threads can be in either first or third, but we'd advise being flexible about it. Remember, these threads can also be used in your application for samples! Reminder: We only require one sample and it can be done in either format. We have also made a change to our sample requirements, so look over the Applications page!

Now with that out of the way, here are some prompts you guys can work from!

PROMPTS

• Prompt A: How about giving the emotions a try? The following emotions will have more effect than usual: fear, bravery, grief, joy, anger, and calm.

• Prompt B: Refer to the Task Board and choose a task your character may be interested in taking up. For this prompt, you could have your character ask for help, already be in the middle of the job, or react to it in some way. Perhaps they were an unfortunate victim or want to create a job countering an existing one. You could even have a prompt making a job request.

• Prompt C: How about giving the amulets a go? Start a telepathic conversation and see how it works. Remember, the amulets are sending out the owner's thoughts so might want to be careful about how the stream of consciousness goes...

• Prompt D: (Taken from the Intro Log) Last month a giant tree overtook the clock tower in Merchant's Square, a place that's usually bustling with social activities and businesses. It still is, but this tree is more than just any normal tree.

HELP! Unfortunately for you, you've landed somewhere atop the leafy branches of the tree. If you can't fly or climb down yourself, you might want to call for help, be it shouting at the top of your lungs or accidentally shouting at the top of your mental lungs for all to hear telepathically. Just be careful not to fall—maybe someone will catch you but would you really want to take those chances?
Memory petal. Beautiful petals the size of one's palm continue to scatter about the city, most of them falling around the tower. These petals will start reflecting a memory of the individual closest to it. Memories are ranging from those that display one's greatest achievement to their greatest fears.
In the tower. Did you happen to wake up inside the tower instead? Bet you weren't expecting it to be dark and dreary with rustling vines that move on their own. There are some hostile creatures, ranging from giant insects and snakes, but easy to fend off. It's even easier if you think happy thoughts. However, if you succumb to your fears, then things will worsen.

• Prompt E: The long awaited tournament has finally arrived, and you can be a part of it!

In the Arena. Whether it was voluntarily or forced into it, you are now facing another Otherworlder to battle. Fortunately, it's not to the death. Unfortunately, how skilled either of you are is completely unknown. The biggest question of all is—can you even fight? But fear not, there's another secret weapon in your arsenal: your emotions. Whether it's striking fear into your opponent's heart with a bolt of courage, or making the ground break and crumble from the adrenaline, this battle will be unlike any have ever seen before!
Sparring match. Maybe you're not quite cut out for an actual bout in the ring. But how about a spar instead? Or maybe you accidentally walked in on someone's practice and are now the target.
Spectating. Shout louder! Let the stadium ring with your voice! Just try not to create too much excitement to actually cause the stadium to physically ring. Wouldn't want it to collapse on itself.

• Prompt F: The weather is a little hypersensitive at the moment, what with all the excitement in the air. Emotions are in full affect as people talk about the winners and losers of the matches. The results can be quite...interesting. For this in heated arguments, that is definitely a dangerous storm brewing around the area. Or maybe the air is getting so hot, things are starting to melt. Maybe it's the opposite—the air is ice cold and a blizzard might happen in the middle of summer! For those gossiping and squealing about their favorites, the sun seems to cast hotter and brighter rays upon them. The air just seems to be electrified! For those lamenting over losses, it just never stops wanting to rain.

• Prompt G: Make your own! It could include something that looks a lot like a vuvuzela and/or mirrors.

For your threads, put the Character Name and the Canon in the subject line to help readily identify them. You're also welcome to use more than one prompt for respondents to choose from. If you have any questions or want to brush up on the game information, refer to the Game Information entry. Otherwise, tag around and have fun!

[... Akihiko had only gone on this stupid chipmunk hunt to keep himself occupied until he found Mitsuru or one of the others. In truth, he had thought that hunting down a chipmunk was as beneath him as a task could be, but it was something to keep him busy and a way for him to be useful until he found work befitting a Shadow Operative.

He didn't expect this job to end with a crazy guy pointing a gun at a semi-innocent animal in broad daylight. Like, cop or not, that's a pretty severe overreaction.]

Wait. [Akihiko struggles to get free again, but yeah, nope, he's still stuck.] Are you insane? Using force is only permissable under existing law when the appropriate situation arises! Like - if the criminal is resisting arrest or something! [... which, ok, he's technically doing by not letting Akihiko grab him, but he's also, you know. a chipmunk. cmon dude.]

Besides, I'm supposed to catch it. That was the request. [they want him alive. he's facing jail time]

Huh? What was that? Sorry, couldn't-- [BANG

Or, not really. It's just Adachi making a really loud gunshot noise as loud as possible and trying to imitate it well. ... And maybe tagging a bit of Agi on the end of the gun to make it look like it discharged. Look, he's bored, ok]

[Th-- WHO WOULD DO THAT DID HE JUST SHOOT THE CHIPMUNK]

[He's.

He's genuinely speechless. Okay, obviously, the bang noise was pretty fake, but Adachi yelled loud enough to send the chipmunk running for it's life and the little burst of fire took Akihiko by surprise for a second. Man. What kind of joke was that?? Could you even classify that as a joke?? This whole thing is super unsettling.]

What... what are you doing? [BECAUSE SERIOUSLY WHAT THE SHIT ADACHI all you had to do was catch the damn chipmunk adachi]

[Adachi just sits there for a moment, smoke wisps rising off the barrel of the gun, cold determination etched on his face- God, he wishes he had a cigar right now. Or a coat thrown over his shoulder, like Dojima. How badass would that be?

... But it only lasts a few seconds before he doubles over laughing, holstering his gun so he can clutch his stomach.]

O-oh, man- geez, kid, y-your face-- God, that was a kick...

[He wipes a tear from his eye and straightens, that dopey look back on his face again.]

... I don't carry tiny little handcuffs or anything, you know? He'll be back. He knows we know his face.

[Even though Akihiko's the one who spent his afternoon stalking chipmunks and falling into some kind of hideous branch/cape trap, he's pretty sure that Adachi is the real idiot here. ... ok maybe they're both idiots, but still. Akihiko's still not sure what to do other than stare and try to wrap his head around what just happened, so with a slightly resigned sigh he just. looks forlornly after where the chipmunk was. while adachi laughs. and makes a completely reasonable joke about handcuffs]

Look, man. One thing I've learned? You're not going to make many friends if you cost them their jobs, especially when you cost them their jobs by pretending to murder the charges they're looking after. [sounds like he had a busy time in america.]

Can you just... get me down from here?

Oh, man... It was a chipmunk. It's not like it won't come back if you just leave some nuts or something out for it. ... And if there's one thing I learned as a cop in Inaba, it's impossible to get a murder charge to stick if the victim's a small rodent!

Huh? Oh, yeah, I guess so. [Adachi casually strolls over, reaches up, and just... undoes Akihiko's cape, 100% hoping that will drop the kid to the ground and leave the cape there.]

[Adachi's wish comes true, and Akihiko freefalls from the tree, but... he's pretty graceful about it, and he lands on his feet, crouching on the ground for a little too long. he looks like an action hero, but only if that action hero came from a film with no budget and a director who cared too much about long, dramatic cut scenes where nobody does anything.]

... Thank you. [He rolls his shoulders like he's trying to throw his cape back from his eyes, but then he seems to realize that, shit, his cape's still up in the tree. so he strolls over and puts his fists on his waist, staring up at it.]

I failed as a bounty hunter. A tree stole my cape. A policeman made a fool of me.

[he stares solemnly up at his cape, which flutters in the breeze. like a sad lonely flag. today has not been a good day. this lack of confidence and unappealing future must be how junpei feels every day of his stupid life.]

Yeah, pretty crap day all around, huh? [Adachi shrugs.] Someone steal your shirt, too?

[Akihiko turns away from his cape to stare at Adachi, completely nonplussed. what is a shirt?? ???? ??? he decides not to address such an outrageous question]

... Are you sure you're involved in law enforcement?

Of course I am, geez! Why would I lie about that? [He rummages through his pockets, briefly laughing to himself about how fucking stupid the Japanese prison system is that they let him keep all his shit, before pulling out his wallet and flashing his badge]

Tohru Adachi, homicide detective, Inaba police department. And I totally helped you out, so it's kinda rude to question me now!

It's just... I'd expect a policeman to be a little more, you know...

[not shit?? akihiko still has this ingrained shred of respect for the police just because he's an overly moral crybaby, so, you know, there's a part of him that always has this image of a superhero policeman in his head whenever he thinks of the cops. but. i mean it's not like adachi is any less competent than the other officers of the law aki's met in his life so

he's also not from a canonpoint where he knows how significant "tohru adachi from inaba" really is, so he just stares pointedly at adachi instead.]

... You're right, I'm being rude. [though you really have a poor definition of what helping someone out is.]

Akihiko Sanada. [AND THATS ALL THE INTRODUCTION YOU GET]

[Huh, that name sounds familiar somehow... ... Ah, who cares? Not Adachi. Now that the kid's stopped being so pointlessly belligerent, he's back to being just some boring dumbass. ... Is that fog rolling in around Adachi's body?]

Yeah, pleasure's all mine, all that. ... So why were you hunting that chipmunk, anyway? Seems like you should be spending your time on something worthwhile.

[Pffffffffffft. Akihiko waves his hand dismissively.]

If I could even find something worthwhile to do around here, I'd be doing it. [he sounds mighty bitter, and when he hears himself, he pauses. he shouldn't be complaining about his job, even if adachi has totally soured him on it by scaring the stupid rat off. and then laughing at him. the jerk]

It was just... I don't know, something to do. The chipmunk had been stealing food, like I said. I offered to track it down... it seemed like a good way to kill time. [he folds his arms across his chest, and he would probably look way more intimidating if he wasn't whining about a chipmunk hunt being boring.]

You're bored so you're chasing chipmunks? Man, kids these days.

Food's not that hard to get around here, anyway. So what if a chipmunk steals a little? That's just how the world works sometimes, you know?
