Zephyras Flower Festival Details
All right guys, we got a lot of information to tell you about for the upcoming event. First of all, this event is entirely optional. While characters can still mingle and walk around the festival, they do not have to actually participate in the activities.
Event Schedule.
TO BE CLEAR: This event is being forward dated. You can still make posts and whatnot during the week for things set to happen prior to the actual festival. But if you do, be sure to clearly note the timing so that players won't accidentally tag it thinking it's occurring during the festival.
Here's the quick calendar:
- 4/13: Main Event starts
- 4/17: Flower King and Queen voting ends
- 4/18: Everyone finalizes their Petal/Emotion Tracker
- 4/19: Event Finale
The results of the event will happen a day or two after Sunday, depending on what happens.
Posts to Keep Track of.
- Main Event Log. This is the one that will house almost everything regarding the event and what everyone will tag into. It will last the entirety of the event. There will be subthreads for various activities, but you'll still need to prepare some engaging prompts for people to tag into. If you need to create a separate log or network post, you are more than welcome to do so.
- OOC: Petal/Emotion Tracker. Like before, there will be a separate OOC post where you will post your character's emotion. In addition, it will serve as a tracker for your character's flower (to be explain further in).
- Flower King and Queen Log. A special subevent that requires its own log. Details in its own subheading.
- OOC: Flower King and Queen Voting and Nomination. The OOC post where characters are nominated and voted for. Details in the subevent's subheading.
These will all go up on Monday. Now with the technical details out of the way, let's go to the content of the event itself.
Change of Tradition.
Thus Elios is going to modify the flowers of those who are willing will wear and the goal is to make these particular flowers bloom. He will make this optional, so the characters can choose whether to do so or not (he's apparently learned his lesson about forcing people to feel a certain way). He will also tell everyone that depending how well they do, he will "something." This does mean that if the characters don't do well, he won't show anything at all. And he might get angry again.
Now, what are they supposed to do?
Special Flowers.
When an emotion is triggered, the petal will open and change to the color associated with the appropriate Arehtei. The shade of the color will indicate if it is positive or negative. Bright colors are positive, dull dark are negative. Because of Elios' influence, alignment will have no effect on the flower, but the emotions will still count more for the Emotion Tracker like always. Those aligned to Elios, however, will feel their flower quiver and hear the petals rustle whenever emotions of that alignment are acquired.
The strength of the emotion will also affect the flower. For instance, if someone feels a considerable amount of joy or love (be it platonic or romantic) toward someone, that could cause several petals to extend outward to "bloom." However, passive feelings may only cause one petal to react.
Elios wants to understand more about what it takes to create bonds and how people come to develop those feelings. Thus new and currently developing CR will have a greater effect on the event as opposed to established CR. Established CR will still count, but only strong emotions will have a noticeable effect on the flower.
As more people are met OR development between people is created, the flower will slowly begin to bloom. When it is in full bloom, a small, fiery dove will appear to collect it. At that point, characters will remove their amulet and both the flower and bird will disappear. When and how a flower gets to full bloom is up to the player. ICly, it could happen quickly or slowly.
Keeping Track: Petals and Emotions.
To make it a little easier for you guys, we will also provide an OOC tracking post for you. Directions will be given on the post, but here's a heads up. First you will create your own thread for each character (separate threads—no combining!). In this thread, you will reply to the top comment for every emotion your character experiences throughout the event. Along with indicating what emotion the character experiences, you will also indicate the state of the flower.
Because threading can take a while and not everyone will be threading out meetings with previously established CR, there will be some handwaving going on. Thus, you can also use this to go ahead and try and pre-plan so that everything is counted before the end of the event.
By Saturday, April 18, you will need to have indicated whether the character's flower will have bloomed or not. If it is not in full bloom, you will need to indicate how far along it is. Is it still completely underdeveloped? Halfway there? Close but not quite? From the emotions gathered, is it bright and colorful? Or is it dull and withering? These details will be important for us to figure out how well the characters did.
Flower King and Queen.
- Nominees. Characters can either submit themselves as a nominee OR they can submit someone else. No permission required (except player permission, of course). Pictures of the character will be placed on the board. The picture will either be a photograph taken on site, a photograph given to them, or an artist rendition based off a telepathic image. Nominations must be done on site.
- Voting. Anyone can vote, and it can be done either on site or telepathically. Since votes are anonymous, they can be done multiple times. Instructions on how to vote will be given on the designated voting post, which will be in
empatheias_ooc.
- Telepathic PSA. Everyone will receive a telepathic PSA about the contest, and there will be continual updates regarding nominations and the votes. We won't be able to do this "in real time" for RP, but the designated post for interactions will be updated to list the nominees and have a link to the votes.
- Communication. There will be an "interaction" log posted in
empatheias where everyone can either react/interact with everyone else either at the site or telepathically. Directions will be given on the post itself as to how to format threads.
Voting ends Friday, April 17, 11:59PM CST. Results will be tallied and posted on the following Saturday, although ICly this would be happening on Sunday. The King and Queen will then be paraded forth and basically set up for a date. Just a dinner, maybe some music and dancing. They will also have to wear a special "costume" and they will have to wear it all day, even if they don't stay together. Isn't that fun?
Festivities.
» Flower Viewing
This is going to act as the "general mingle" thread. There are designated areas in the various parks and outside of the city where people can just sit, have a picnic, and enjoy the flowers. There will usually be music and attendants to offer drinks and light snacks. Just watch out for the couples—they will be all over the place and the concept of "PDA" isn't as applicable during the festival.
» Food
There will of course be food available for everyone. Some stores will also be open and either offering their services for free or at a heavy discount. All food venues will be around Merchant's Square. In addition to the food are two specific activities that characters can partake in:
- Cake Feeding. One of the main attractions is a buffet of all you can eat cake. Chocolate cake, vanilla cake, strawberry cake, marble cake, ice cream cake, apple cake, and more are available for this tasting. The catch: you cannot eat cake all by yourself. You must find a partner to eat cake with! How, you may ask? By feeding it to them! Why, yes, this is mimicking the cake eating tradition found at weddings. Careful not to shove that cake in their face! Or maybe that's what you want to do.
- "Pocky" Game. Of course, the label on these chocolate-covered biscuit sticks are not "Pocky" but "Tocky". For this game, two people must enter and share a tocky stick. Beginning on opposite ends, the two must slowly chew their way to the center. If you break the stick completely, you lose! But oh no, if you continue eating the stick, the two of you will kiss! Bailing results in losing, too. Good luck! Prizes include a free dinner for two at Devlin's on the Shore or free ice cream for two at Elui's Frozen Confectionery.
Characters are also free to set up their own food tables or help out with the locals.
» Games
There will be plenty of game booths and stands, all of which will be by the lake. They range from traditional shooting galleries, balloon popping, dunking booth, ring toss, mock fighting exhibitions, etc. Whatever you can think of, it will likely be there. However, there is one additional main attraction that's set just outside the city.
- Plant Invasion (2-Person Adventure Game). Remember those angry gardens from the Introduction Log? They're making a return, but this time as an interactive game. Set just outside of the city is a large enclosed greenhouse and its interior is filled with hostile plants. Some are naturally hostile and some have been influenced by angry and negative emotions. The goal is to make it through and rack up points.
- Buddy system. All participants are paired into teams of two. This can be either voluntarily made or chosen at random.
- Special gear. All players will wear specially designed "armor" and armed with specially designed weapons. The weapons range from firearms to standard melee blade weapons. Each weapon is coated with a special chemical that will cause the plants to relax and recede back, so no plants should be harmed in this game. For their "helmet," players will be wearing those special flower crowns. These flower crowns will help indicate how well (or poorly) the players are performing.
- Flower Crowns. As more hostile plants are "calmed," the flowers on the crowns will bloom more and reflect the emotions of the environment. This includes both the state of the plants and the players. Even if the plants are "calmed," if the players are producing negative emotions toward each other, the crowns will react and start attacking the wearer by pricking them with small thorns and vines. If there is good teamwork going on and the players produce positive emotions, then additional flowers will bloom to produce a special pollen to help calm the plants around them. If players manage to have all flowers on the crown bloom, they'll receive max points and get a reward.
- The prizes. Prizes range from a very lovely bouquet of flowers to a small potted plant version of one of the hostile plants. No worries, the plant won't bite. Unless you stick your finger at its "mouth."
- Buddy system. All participants are paired into teams of two. This can be either voluntarily made or chosen at random.
Game attendants will be on standby and if teams have a considerably difficult time, the sprinklers will go off and the plants will stop attacking. Players will come out drenched and may have a bit of a blue hue.
» Music and Dance
No festival would be without its fair share of music and dancing. There are designated parks where these take place, although there are several "traveling" musicians going about, so it could really happen anywhere. But there is one special tradition that will also be available.
- "Ena Trees." Based off the European "Maypole" tradition, for those unfamiliar, it's a tradition where a pole is erected and a group of individuals take the ends of long streamers, ribbon, or garland and dance around it in a circle. The end result is a beautifully wrapped pole. Several of these will be the open parks and people can either join in willingly or dragged in by exuberant participants. The Ena Trees will have long, garlands of flowers, all of which will shimmer and glow various colors reflecting the lighthearted atmosphere.
Characters are of course free to participate in any musical activity.
» Miscellaneous
And finally, the catch all for everything else that doesn't fit in with the above categories. Arts and crafts, kite flying, sailing across the lake, popping fireworks—whatever else you might think of that might be fun to do, drop it in here!
Wait, wait, what about that flower matchmaking tradition!?
Everyone drops their flowers into designated shallow pools of water. The flowers have a unique signal transmitter attached to them and the owner will have the receiver. Participants then go around and pick a flower. The moment a flower is picked, two things will happen. First, the picker must send a signal through the device to make their own flower sink into the water, making it unavailable to be picked. Then, once the picker chooses the flower, they must activate the flower's transmitter. This will alert the flower's owner. The two will meet and off they go to have a date. If any mistakes were made, the flowers and transmitters are reset.
Thus if you want to play this out, you should pre-plan with your partner how the two got matched (who picked whose flower?) and then you'll be free to thread out the date.
And of course the locals will want to see lots of couples, so some may be roped into doing things together whether they'd like it or not. Feel free to incorporate that throughout the event.
Tag out!

Phew, that's a lot, but that should cover most everything. If you have any questions or wondering if a certain activity would be available at the festival, just comment here. Otherwise, feel free to use this post as a plotting post.
