TEST DRIVE: October

Welcome to

empatheias' test drive meme. This test drive is to help interested players test their characters in the game's environment. We've included a few prompts that incorporate specific elements of the game, though you'll find all of them have a lot of leeway for players to get as creative as necessary. Before diving in, here are a few things we'd like to remind everyone about the game in general:

Date reminders. Reserves open Sunday, September 24 and Applications (Canon | OC) open a week later on October 1st. Apps will only be open for four days!
OC Reminder! Just a quick reminder that original characters are allowed. Those interested can also use the test drive. OCs do not need to be reserved.
Emotions are key! Empatheias' premise focuses on how anyone's emotions can affect their environment, be it big or small. While not every emotion will cause a reaction, significant ones definitely will. How much effect a character will have will ultimately be up to you, the player. Also, while we're giving a lot of leeway for the test drive, keep in mind that there will be some limits in the actual game.
Everyone has an amulet. All characters have a unique amulet that is specialized for them. It will contain all of their emotion drops and it serves as the network device. Remember, communication is telepathic. Otherwise, it works basically the same.
Assume the character is already in the game. Because "OMG WHERE AM I IS THIS REAL LIFE" threads aren't going to be very helpful in this test drive! Plus, those are going to happen in-game, anyway. So to make things easier, just assume that they've been around at least a week or so. Still learning the ropes, but not a complete "first day" experience.
First or third person allowed. Your threads can be in either first or third, but we'd advise being flexible about it. Remember, these threads can also be used in your application for samples! Reminder: We only require one sample and it can be done in either format. We have also made a change to our sample requirements, so look over the Applications page!
Transfer to in-game. If accepted, you can assume threads made on the Test Drive happen in-game if the scenario can reasonably fit. These threads do not count toward AC.

Now with that out of the way, here are some prompts you guys can work from!

PROMPTS

• Prompt A: How about giving the emotions a try?

• Prompt B: Refer to the Task Board and choose a task your character may be interested in taking up. For this prompt, you could have your character ask for help, already be in the middle of the job, or react to it in some way. Perhaps they were an unfortunate victim or want to create a job countering an existing one. You could even have a prompt making a job request. Creating jobs for the purpose of the test drive is absolutely doable.

• Prompt C: How about giving the amulets a go? Start a telepathic conversation and see how it works. Remember, the amulets are sending out the owner's thoughts so might want to be careful about how the stream of consciousness goes...

• Prompt D: With the crystal having been mysteriously stolen, the weather has been nothing but uncooperative, lately. Actually, uncooperative is an understatement. Just yesterday, it was raining frogs! Now, well…

In the Sky with Diamonds. You might be walking in the streets or in the safe confines of a building when it begins to hail. It's not just any ordinary hail. Instead of ice falling from the sky, it's little beads and pieces of… you guessed it: diamonds! Some are actually fake, but there are some that are genuine. Only the experienced eye will be able to tell. The catch is, it only rains diamonds for ten seconds. And in this short span of time, people have gone berserk over the stone. Looks like some are eager to sell what they've collected, while some are fighting over what "should be theirs". Are you one of those people opportunistic enough to make money out of this, or are you doing something else of your own?
One in a Melon. The crazy weather has not only been affecting the people living in Empatheias, but also the flora and fauna. The fruit stands everywhere have been selling all kinds of hybrid fruit, ranging from melons the size of a building to blue grapes that taste like chocolate! The latter sounds oddly delicious, truth be told. The vendors are all for giving free samples to anybody who passes by, too. In fact, there's one fruit stand that seems to be selling really well. Investigate, and you'll be given a slice of pineapple! Take a bite, and it tastes like Hawaiian pizza. Is this heaven or hell?

• Prompt E: It's safer to stay indoors given the strange weather, but you can't help but go out in the streets and explore! You're in a new world, after all. There is so much to see! Of course, when it begins to rain cats and dogs (either literally or figuratively), you look for a place to hide. Somehow, you've managed to enter a building that's dark, only lit by a flame in the middle of the room. There are a lot of hooded men and women surrounding the flame.

Welcome! When they notice someone else enter, they all look at the door's direction. "Ah! It seems we have a new arrival. Welcome to the Ortheias. You are now in a world where your magic can change the emotions of people. What is your name?"

It looks like you've entered the headquarters of some roleplaying cult. Try and leave, and they will explain to you that nobody can leave. Nobody even knows why they're here. And then someone will casually whisper to you these exact words: "As an OOC Note, we will all leave in an hour and half from now." Do you create a character, or do you play as yourself?
Getting Acclimated. With everyone in the room doing their own thing and "gathering relationships", as they so put it, you've been left to your own devices. Do you talk to other people who might be stuck here for an hour and half, or do you practice your "Emanis"? It seems that this fictional world they've created lets each person manipulate the other person's emotions by casting spells. A short display of fire can make someone angry, or making flowers appear out of nowhere might make the other person happy. Of course, these are all fake and the cult just narrates their usage of magic without actually displaying it.
An Event! Towards the end of the roleplaying session, the "roleplay moderator" announces an event! One of the guardians of Ortheias, the Durathei of fire and ice, Seesonne, has attacked the city of Snerev! A part of the city is now burning, while the other half is encased in ice! What would you do in this situation? People are panicking, so you must stop them from worrying too much!

• Prompt F: While Halloween does not exist in this world, Otherworlders have been present long enough for the natives to slightly change their calendar. For the month of Empta (October), they wish to make sure the Otherworlders are feeling at home by celebrating Halloween! They know nothing about it, but they are going to try and replicate the feeling!

Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo. For the rest of Exi (September), farmers are asking Otherworlders to help them harvest pumpkins. Thanks to the strange weather recently, these pumpkins have grown to be the size of a car. They're rather big! What's more, they've also grown legs and can run! It appears they don't want to be caught, but anyone who gives chase will be able to get them to stop easily. Just chop off its legs! And to make it inanimate, one has to carve a face on it.
What's Your Favourite Scary Story? To prepare for what's to come next month, the natives are asking Otherworlders to go to the Welcome Centre every weekend for a meeting of sorts. One will be able to find refreshments and snacks there, and there are a lot of people listening to speakers who rotate every so often. It seems these speakers are talking about their favourite scary stories. Perhaps you're one of the listeners, or you're speaking and sharing yours! Things are beginning to be spooky, though, that's for sure.
It Leaves a Good Taste in Your Mouth. Children are selling cookies door-to-door, and the only type of cookies they're selling are maple leaf cookies. It's only 10 sylvs a box, and taking just one bite will send one to heaven! It's so delicious that it might make anyone who eats it react in a strange way (the video is just an example, not the exact reaction). Spectate at how people react to these maple leaf cookies, or be the one that gathers a lot of attention!

• Prompt G: Make your own! It could include cat ears and/or nail polish.

[Hey, it'd be rude to pass up free food right? Or almost free. Selphie's starving so she's not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Unfortunately after she takes a huge bite of the pineapple slice and begins to chew, her nose wrinkles and her face starts to turn a pale shade of sickly green. Uh oh. Hopefully no one's around as she turns to spit out the pineapple, otherwise it's going to land on their shoes.]

UGH, THAT'S TOTALLY GROSS. Who the heck makes fruit taste like PIZZA?

[You would think a teenage girl would find the whole task of "chase these pumpkins and lob off their legs" a little disgusting, but no. Not Selphie. Anyone else who is around will be treated to the sight of a pumpkin gut covered, but thrilled looking brunette currently chasing after her fourth giant legged pumpkin.]

I SAID GET BACK HERE! [She shouts this as both she and the pumpkin round a corner around a large rock. Unfortunately, Selphie fails to notice a pile of recently carved pumpkin guts, and once her boot lands in them she slides forward with a yelp before landing roughly on her back.] Oof! Ugh, what a jerk. I bet he planed that to escape! [she sits up and offers a grin over towards the nearest person, holding a hand out.]

Heeeey give me a hand will you? He's gonna get away!! [she's enjoying this too much.]

[He takes her hand, having watched with a wince as she slipped and fell on the pumpkin guts. He made his way over and was glad she was okay. Pulling her up and out of the pumpkin mess, he frowned at her ruined dress.]

Aw, well that sucks. Your dress is ruined. You sure you wanna keep chasin' the pumpkin?

[Then again, she had been going at it despite her dress. He gave her a grin.]

If you do, I'll help ya out!

[She accepts the help, of course but is oddly quiet for a moment as she stares. Right. At. Laguna. Sir Laguna.]

OH MY GOSH. Sir Laguna?! Is that really you?!

[okay so she might not have been concerned about the state of her dress before but now she's making an effort to clean up the mess off of the yellow garment. Crap, crud this is the WORST first impression!!!]

If it's Sir Laguna offering to help me out, there's no way I'd say no!!!

Whoa!

[He jumps a little at the enthusiasm and then sheepishly rubs the back of his head. How did he not recognize her before?]

Yeah, that's me. How ya been, Selphie?

[He sees the effort she's making to clean off her dress now and he can't help but chuckle.]

C'mon, let's get you some clean clothes, I have a feeling the pumpkins are still gonna be around for awhile.

Great, actually! This place is super weird but I think I kinda like it. There's so much to do!

[but uh wait. She frowns.] But hey, we're just gonna waste time getting clean clothes, if we're beating up pumpkin monsters we're just gonna wind up with more guts right?

[EVEN IF SHOPPING WITH SIR LAGUNA WOULD BE AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE]

Ah-...hm.

[She had a point there. But he was also sure the shopkeepers wouldn't want them spoiling the clothes with pumpkin guts either.]

Well, the shops won't let us in if we're all dirty like that. Well, I s'pose we could always just ask Squall for some extra, he lives in a big house with a lot of people, y'know! Someone's gotta have extra, right?

[ Good thing he doesn't really care about his shoes or this would be slightly annoying.

He raised an eyebrow.]

[she's still feeling a little green over that disgusting pineapple. But not enough to avoid the bubbling excitement in her stomach to reach her face once she realizes who's in front of her.]

SQUALL!!! It's you! Heeey! [she pauses, then lifts a hand up to scratch the back of her head.] Haha, uh, sorry about your shoes. But man I'm glad to see you!!

[ he didn't really seem to care about his boots. Infact he awkwardly held up his arms in reply.
]

... I will let you give me one hug, because I'm in a good mood. Make it count.

...You'll LET me hug you? [her face is incredulous, but uh, she's not going to take this chance for granted....

So enjoy her flinging herself at you in what could only be called a bear hug despite her smaller stature.] You sure you're feeling alright though Squall? Like, a good mood? REALLY?

It's been a while since I've seen you... for me anyway. So I'm feeling a little sentimental...

[ It's very awkward, but Squall pats her back in return. Then again who'd expect Squall not to be awkward when it came to normal human interaction. ]

[it wouldn't feel right if it wasn't awkward tbh.]

Woah, it must have been like at least five years if you're feeling sentimental. [she'll finally release squall though, and grin up at him.]

You've been all by yourself this whole time?

Mm. I've been here for months, but I've been the only one of our team here it seems.

[ Rinoa manages to catch Selphie in the act of spitting on a stranger's shoes, and all she can do is question her entire life. ]

Does it really taste that bad? [ She asks the vendor nearby to give her a small piece of pineapple, too. Unlike Selphie, her bite is a lot more refined. It's a lot smaller, too! There's a lot of sweetness in the small bite that she did, and she can taste cheese and tomato sauce... Hey, this is pizza! ]

I think it's good.

[ OH HELL NO. ]

[It wasn't on purpose don't you judge her like this.....]

Ugh, Rinoa.... You can't really mean that! There's no way fruit should also taste like pizza.

Creative doesn't really mean it's tasty tho. But I guess that just means its YOUR job to eat all the gross pizza from now on.

[she holds out the rest of her pizza pineapple. You take it rinoa, relieve her of this abomination.]

[ Pineapple leftovers... okay, this doesn't seem so bad. It's not like Selphie has any cooties.

She plucks it out of Selphie's fingers! ]

Thanks. I think I need some iced tea with this, too. Let's go get a drink.

[ Free food is something to be suspicious of, especially as a SeeD. While their world may be in harmony more than it perhaps ever been, you typically want to at least give this sort of thing a look-over or two to ensure it's safe to eat.

But she's over-thinking things and she knows this because SeeD isn't important here and Garden has no presence -- and there's a crowd so big that surely they must be doing something right with their strange harvest.

The thing is, though, when Quistis Trepe lets her guard down... this is what happens to her. She gets a chunk of food spit on her boot and it's by a friend to make matters worse. Yet somehow, a part of her can't be bothered to care and figures the face Selphie is making kind of squares them off. Gently, she lifts her foot and twists her ankle so the offending fruit falls to the ground. ]

Is... that what the line is for? [ She'd just saw the fruit and though some of it seemed a little odd, she expected it was a regional thing. ] You know, odd tastes in your mouth can mean you've had a stroke, Selphie. Are you feeling alright?

[ You know, other than having a vile-tasting thing in your mouth and all. ]

Quisty!!! Oh no your shoes, I'm sorry!! Total bummer, I promise it wasn't intentional!

[she's feeling around in her pockets for a napkin, something... even though Quistis has already taken care of the problem.] ... Wait what? Woah, you're not saying I'm having a stroke are you?!

I promise it's just that this place's food is totally weird! You should try it, even if it's gross.

I can't imagine what someone might have to do to befall such treatment intentionally from you.

[ She's in good spirits despite it and though she's not pleased about her shoes, she's learned over the past several months how to be a little less uptight. She'd like to think she's managing well. ]

Ah, it was sort of a joke? [ She'll have to work on her delivery. ] Are you trying to suggest I give you a payback, then? [ She vaguely pushes to the tips of her toes to gaze over the crowd at the wares offered, nudging her glasses up as if it'll give her an advantage somehow. ] It just looks like normal fruits and vegetables. Are you sure that tasted like pizza? Perhaps it was just spoiled?
