Canach has always been a bit of a vigilante type, but still runs along his own tune. And he's kind of bored and beating up humans while taking down an illegal ring is one way to do something.
He doesn't doubt that there will be others there, and seeing a few will only confirm that. Having had to do his own investigations and infiltration before, this isn't new for him either. His main way of "investigating" is really just participating in fights, figuring out who the strong members out, try and learn or lure out the leader that way. Lurk around dark alleys, make a few in-roads via winning fights. After all, not only would he be a potential rising fighter, being beaten by a non-human may spark something there. Make things interesting. As noble and well-spoken as he can appear, he's also quite crass. Getting under someone's skin is a great way to instigate fights and being an arrogant asshole is another. Given that he's also done some jail time as an ex-criminal, he also knows a bit about how that works.
In terms of his fighting prowess, he's had to deal fighting both humans and crazy creatures and dragon minions—including actual elder dragon (or well the mind dinosaur bear form of it). His arsenal of weapons includes the sword and shield, but he also knows his way with bombs and grenades. Obviously, unless the fights are including weapons, he's not using those. And with weapons, he'd stick with sword and shield. But he is a very adept Warrior class fighter and can be brutal (he was out on the run during his dark past as a criminal—fun story). Actually, now that I think about it, whenever it's time to perform the full sting, he will gladly chuck a few status effect filled grenades (sleep, paralysis, freeze, poison—name it he can make it).
If he finds that there are others doing the whole infiltration thing—although he prefers working on his own, he'd help if he finds the plan agreeable. Otherwise, he may do the "parallel" alliance where he won't directly help, but he won't get in the way and provide assistance when needed as they go toward the same goal. It just kind of depends on who it is and how he feels that day lol.
Personally I'd rather he DO work with someone. Make friends you stupid cactus. Only other thing is having a fight or two to have interesting conversations out of that, but otherwise I'm handwaving that.
