Kid advice?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
There's this ungrateful brat I've been trying to watch out for, but he keeps running off because he thinks he can take care of himself. Every time I find him again, he's collapsed from hunger. I want to help him, but he's stubborn and he keeps running away every time I get a solid meal in him.

I can't just leave him to die, but this is seriously getting old. Any tips for getting a skittish teen to stick around?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Tie him up.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
That seems like terrible advice....

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
It would keep him around.

Since he's collapsing before he'll ask you for help, have you considered that maybe he just rather seriously dislikes you...?

Stop chasing him. If he's that stubborn you'll just make him want to run from you all the more. Make sure he knows your kitchen is open to him if he needs it and let him be.

Re: Kid advice?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he totally dislikes me.

I'm trying to be the bigger person and helping him out anyway though. Otherwise, it's too easy to imagine him going and getting himself killed in some back alley.

Or falling off a roof.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
If he doesn't want your help, forcing it on him is only going to make him resent you all the more.

Set someone else on him if you really give that much of a damn. And really, if you have to come out and say "I'm trying to be the bigger person", you're probably just as much a brat as he is.

my keepers at home kept me locked up all the time at first because they thought it was for the best, but no locks could hold me and I ran away a lot

finally they let me decide what I wanted to do about staying or going and I decided to stay, but only if they made a few important changes to how I was being treated

oh, and I did really dislike the guy who thought it was a good idea to keep me locked up... then it got easier for us to actually respect each other after the changes got made, go figure

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not locking him up! I find him collapsing on the street, taking him home to get food, and then he leaves again. Rinse and repeat. I'm just getting tired of him doing this over and over. It's like dealing with a stray cat.

Beat him.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hell no. What is wrong with you?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Not seriously, or anything! Just enough to exhaust him, and then you can take him back and explain to him that he's in a better place. Perhaps this will stop him running away.

actually don't tie him up or beat him up

a friend of mine was raised like that and it just made him escape harder, for obvious reasons

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I am not planning to beat or tie up a child okay.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I would suggest trying to find out why he wishes to escape your presence.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's complicated.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well I would think that resolving it might solve a bulk of your problems without resorting to some of the more drastic measures other anons are suggesting.

Are there any others that he associates with that could help convince him?

Re: Kid advice?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
That's the problem! He's got no friends and no allies and he thinks he can handle himself and that's why I keep finding him alone and starving to death. It wouldn't be a problem if he were just avoiding me, but he's just gonna end up dead at this rate.

Kids are best when they're brainwashed.

I suggest reconditioning until he gets to do what you want.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
There's so many things wrong with this I'm not even gonna bother.

No.

I don't think he's ungrateful, really. It sounds a lot like he simply wants to prove he can take care of himself. Maybe ease back a little bit? If you keep pushing, that'll just drive him off.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Knowing the kid myself?

He's a total ingrate. He's just too stubborn to ask for help.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, if he dies it probably won't happen again and he'll come back as well.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a pretty heartless way of handling it, don't you think?
