I'm not sure. It's likely that the crystal served to help regulate the energy levels and emotional effects around the city, and now that it's gone, there's nothing left to stabilize the environment.

That doesn't answer the question of why diamonds, though. Up until now, the effects that our emotions have on the environment have been minimal. I've certainly never seen anybody create anything.
