The unfortunate part is that Qui-Gon is a relic from a time long passed, when the Jedi were plenty and their philosophies, although waning in strength, still spread far and wide enough that they were recognizable. It didn't take long for the Empire to all but completely wipe out that particular branch of people who studied the Force so intently.
