As for why they were doing it in the first place, there was no better way to get the lay of the laid or find help from others than by helping with small tasks now and then. In addition while their rooms and needs were paid for now they would eventually have to earn enough to make it on their own, and Chirrut for one did not like the idea of begging on street corners again.

"Perhaps they're running from the looks that you're giving them. Once we have enough the others will likely follow, after all no one wants to be left on their own."
