Heroes, or maybe the idea of heroes is important to have. They give the people something to look up to, gives them hope even when times are dark. Of course, I say all this generally. Heroes can be anyone from an older family member or maybe a teacher you look up to, or even something less tangible like a legend or a concept.

For instance, there's an urban myth back in my world about a man called Kamen Rider. He's a masked man who fights evil from the shadows. He fights for no reward or recognition, against an army of darkness who will stop at nothing to take the world. I suppose you could call a man like that a hero to those he's helped, but I doubt he'd consider himself as such.
