TEST DRIVE: AUGUST

— TEST DRIVE: AUGUST —

Welcome to [community profile] empatheias' test drive meme. This test drive is to help interested players test their characters in the game's environment. We've included a few prompts that incorporate specific elements of the game, though you'll find all of them have a lot of leeway for players to get as creative as necessary. Before diving in, here are a few things we'd like to remind everyone about the game in general:

  • Date reminders. Reserves open Monday, July 25 and Applications (Canon | OC) open Sunday, August 1st.

  • OC Reminder! Just a quick reminder that original characters are currently allowed. Those interested can also use the test drive. OCs do not need to be reserved.

  • Emotions are key! Empatheias' premise focuses on how anyone's emotions can affect their environment, be it big or small. While not every emotion will cause a reaction, significant ones definitely will. How much effect a character will have will ultimately be up to you, the player. Also, while we're giving a lot of leeway for the test drive, keep in mind that there will be some limits in the actual game.

  • Everyone has an amulet. All characters have a unique amulet that is specialized for them. It will contain all of their emotion drops and it serves as the network device. Remember, communication is telepathic. Otherwise, it works basically the same.

  • Assume the character is already in the game. Because "OMG WHERE AM I IS THIS REAL LIFE" threads aren't going to be very helpful in this test drive! Plus those are going to happen in-game, anyway. So to make things easier, just assume that they've been around at least a week or so. Still learning the ropes, but not a complete "first day" experience.

  • First or third person allowed. Your threads can be in either first or third, but we'd advise being flexible about it. Remember, these threads can also be used in your application for samples! Reminder: We only require one sample and it can be done in either format. We have also made a change to our sample requirements, so look over the Applications page!

Now with that out of the way, here are some prompts you guys can work from!

PROMPTS

• Prompt A: How about giving the emotions a try?

• Prompt B: Refer to the Task Board and choose a task your character may be interested in taking up. For this prompt, you could have your character ask for help, already be in the middle of the job, or react to it in some way. Perhaps they were an unfortunate victim or want to create a job countering an existing one. You could even have a prompt making a job request. Creating jobs for the purpose of the test drive is absolutely doable.

• Prompt C: How about giving the amulets a go? Start a telepathic conversation and see how it works. Remember, the amulets are sending out the owner's thoughts so might want to be careful about how the stream of consciousness goes...

• Prompt D: EVENT SPECIAL. Feel free to check out Light of Helisium beach party and use the prompts from there! It ranges from standard fare beach fun to the major highlight of the year: Verenthian Warrior. It's like the extreme Ninja Warrior obstacle course but with a twist. There are also giant crabs that may or may not be set loose. Alternatively, maybe you'd prefer the masquerade side of things. A chance to pretend to be someone you're not and perhaps find romance.

• Prompt E: IT'S A BUNNY INVASION! Driven out by the gophers that have swarmed the fields, the bunnies have turned toward the city for food. And as luck would have it, many of the farmers are also transporting their crop to the city storehouses for safekeeping due to aforementioned gopher problem. One of the wagons carrying large crates full of carrots and lettuce has turned over, and those bunnies are just swarming all over the place. Oh, but you can't kill them. The Wildlife Society is encouraging more humane methods. They are: crates made out of cushions, pillow traps, carrot costumes to act as bait, and a special ocarina that is said to help attract the rabbits. The ocarina may or may not help depending on the tune played and may actually make them angrier.

• Prompt F: There's a new popular game in town where two people work together to get through a specially designed maze. One person goes through the maze while the other is standing on a platform above, using telepathy to give directions. The catch? The maze is completely dark and the one going through it only has floating ball of light to help illuminate their path. The one giving directions has a clear view at least, so it's up to them to get their partner out. What makes the maze "fun" is that there are various "traps" and obstacles in the maze. Nice partners will help their friend avoid them. The trolls, however... Well if they'd like to see their partner get splashed with paint, hit with pillows, or have random costumed "creatures" pop out to scare the crap out of them, that's an option, too.

• Prompt G: Make your own! It could include fake explosives and/or jars of hot wax.

For your threads, put the Character Name and the Canon in the subject line to help readily identify them. You're also welcome to use more than one prompt for respondents to choose from. If you have any questions or want to brush up on the game information, refer to the Game Information entry. Otherwise, tag around and have fun!

I...think that's right.

[ As far as she remembers, anyway, but the world's changed a lot since she last remembered it. She doesn't think that vocabulary would change over the span of a year and a half, but one never knows. That's not the point here, though; the point is that they need to work together to capture these bunnies, so Komaru nods her head in response to Junko's suggestion and begins looking through the equipment once again. ]

Then, I'll take some of the pillow traps and start setting them around the area...hey, that wagon full of vegetables fell over, right? [ She points in the direction where the wagon's overturned, and a large number of rabbits are gathered together, nibbling hungrily on the produce. ] Do you think if we use some of those carrots and lay them in the traps, we can lure them in?
sobored: (LAME! LAME! LAME! LAME!)

[personal profile] sobored 2016-07-19 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that sounds like a plan. A little cartoony, sure, but I think it'll work. So while you're doing that, I'll go grab some of the carrots, and bring them over, and we'll have them rounded up in no time!

[It's such a bright hopeful statement, that...isn't meant at all, sorry. So of course, she has to make up for it, right? She can't say something that gross without finding a way to throw a wrench in things. So instead of calmly walking the carrots over, she's running over towards the traps now, looking slightly panicked.]

Hey, uh, I hope you're ready because they're not very happy about this!

[Maybe they picked up on her real emotions or maybe she took the carrots they were eating to mess up the plan but there's a horde of angry rabbits chasing after her. What a despairingly ridiculous situation she seems to have ended up in.]

[personal profile] omaru 2016-07-20 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
H-Huh...?!

[ Komaru looks over, and just like Junko said, there are a ton of angry rabbits coming towards them. The very sight is shocking enough for Komaru to drop the traps she had in her arms right onto the ground. Her hand instinctively reaches for her megaphone, which would normally be hooked onto her skirt, but of course, she grabs air in its place. Not that it would have been effective in this situation in the first place - they're live animals, not robots.

But that just makes it scarier for her. She looks over at Junko, panic in her eyes, as the mass of rabbits continue to encroach. ]

W-What do we do? I-I mean, we could run, but...t-that'd just make them angrier and chase us, right?

[ Even here in Verens, she's still unable to make her own decisions and has to ask others to make them for her. ]
sobored: (But A Free Trip's A Free Trip!)

[personal profile] sobored 2016-07-21 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
[Presumably Junko's filing that gesture away in the back of her head somewhere, if only because what on earth sort of weapon would she even go for? But that's a question for another time.]

I don't know! This totally isn't the first time I've had to make a run for it, but not like this!

[Which just raises questions, but Junko's not answering those right now. She's too busy trying to run past Komaru, leaving her in the path of the rabbits. Not exactly the most despair inducing situation, but hey, Junko'll take what she can get at this point.]

Hey, if you're going to do something with those, you better pick them back up quick!

[Or get stampeded by rabbits, y'know, whichever one works for her.]
omaru: official sprite (SPRITE ► huh?!)

[personal profile] omaru 2016-07-22 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
H-Hey, wait! D-Don't leave me behind...!

[ Although, Komaru doubts that she's actually going to listen to her, but there's no time to focus on whether she does or not. She doesn't have much time to make a decision, so instead she follows Junko's advice and scrambles to pick most of the traps back up, and hurries after the other girl. One would think that after battling all of those Monokumas - especially the Junk Monokuma, in all of its horrific glory - she wouldn't be scared of something as mere as a hoard of rabbits.

But it's Komaru. Of course she's scared. And in true Komaru fashion, once she's managed to somewhat catch up to Junko, traps in hand, she asks: ]

W-What now? They're--They're coming too fast for us to actually lay any traps down...
sobored: (super super super super despair)

[personal profile] sobored 2016-07-22 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, we're totally doomed.

[She's completely deadpan about it, like it's just going to happen and they'll be overrun by rabbits and in a few days or a week they'll come back and just look back at their despairing demise by a rabbit stampede.]

I don't see a way out of this at all, so we're totally screwed. But you know what? It was a good run, right?

[Oh wait, no, she has an idea.]

I mean it's not like we could put the traps down to trip them or split them up, right? That probably wouldn't work, so I guess it's curtains.
omaru: official sprite (SPRITE ► huh?!)

sorry for the late tag!

[personal profile] omaru 2016-07-25 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
S-Stop! If you say that, it might actually happen!

[ ...But come to think of it, that is a good idea, one that might actually work...mostly because it sounds like a survival flag. Thanks, Junko. ]

I mean...it might work, a-and it's not like we really have any other options available, so...

[ Might as well, right? It's better than giving up, anyway, so with that mindset, Komaru scatters the traps below in an attempt to break up the approaching horde...which, as expected, does work in splitting them up and stalling them. ]
sobored: (What a Hopeless Conversation)

don't worry about it!

[personal profile] sobored 2016-07-25 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, what do you know, I said something, and it totally did happen! Guess we're pretty lucky it was this one and not the other one, right?

[She sure is sounding relieved that they didn't die, and the rabbit horde has been dispersed. Which doesn't solve the initial problem of there being a rabbit horde in the first place, but hey, now they can regroup and figure out a new strategy, right?

Okay, no, she's in despair because how hopeless would it have been to win the award for the silliest death in the city's history? Seriously, it would've been great, right? Or maybe she's the only one who sees it that way.]

But I'm starting to think we're not cut out for this sort of thing. I mean we couldn't even do that right, what are we going to do if they regroup?

[It's totally hopeless isn't it?]
omaru: official sprite (SPRITE ► ehehe!)

[personal profile] omaru 2016-07-26 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
We can't give up now!

[ Says the girl who was about to give up a few moments earlier... ]

The pillow traps may not have worked, but there's still some other methods we can try, right? I'm sure we can do it.

[ She flashes Junko a bright, optimistic smile. Hope was still a skill she was acquiring, but this situation was far less dangerous than battling Monokumas and the Warriors of Hope, so she didn't see the point in giving up this early. ]
sobored: (Brace Yourself There's A Twist)

[personal profile] sobored 2016-07-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Ugh, what the hell, how can she be so hopeful about something this dumb? Does it run the family or what? It probably does, doesn't it? It has to. Some gross hope gene going back through their family tree or something. That makes sense.

Oh, but she can't stand around here and fight the urge to scowl all day. Not just because of the rabbits but because that's boring, and she can't do boring. So instead, she'll go along with Komaru's hopeful statements. It's gross and awful and makes her skin crawl, but for her, that's just more reason to do it.]

Yeah, maybe we should give that costume another look. Or that ocarina. It couldn't hurt, right?

[She's going for cautiously optimistic here. Not even remotely close to how she really feels, but just ignore the grass wilting at her feet. Totally a coincidence!]
omaru: official sprite (SPRITE ► eager.)

[personal profile] omaru 2016-07-29 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
[ Komaru, of course, doesn't notice the grass wilting at the girl's feet. Maybe if she did, she would get an inkling as to whom she was truly talking to, but instead, she's quick to start mulling over her suggestions, a lot more encouraged. ]

I don't know how to play an ocarina, but we can totally give it a shot!

[ She's saving the costumes for a last resort, but hey, if she has to, then she will. ]
sobored: (Huh? When Did You Get On A Train?)

[personal profile] sobored 2016-07-29 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Me either, but it can't go worse than the traps, right?

[Or maybe it can. Junko's a negative person, so who the hell knows?]
omaru: official sprite (SPRITE ► ehehe!)

[personal profile] omaru 2016-08-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you've got a point there.

[ Because the traps was by far the worst experience. Regardless, she heads over to the supplies to retrieve the ocarina and eyes it curiously. Wow, that looks strange. ]

I...guess it's a little bit like a harmonica, huh?

[ Sure, Komaru. ]
sobored: (LAME! LAME! LAME! LAME!)

[personal profile] sobored 2016-08-03 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I think those are totally different.

[Seriously?

God, maybe next time she has her minions kidnap someone they can give her an N64 or something. A little dated, but these things are important to learn, Komaru.]

But we don't have time to nitpick, so go on, give it a shot.
omaru: official sprite (SPRITE ► if you say so...)

[personal profile] omaru 2016-08-04 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, um, okay?

[ Komaru takes another glance down at the ocarina before tentatively placing the mouthpiece in her mouth, aaand...she begins to play. It's about as horrible as one would expect, given the fact that she doesn't know how to play whatsoever, so she's just randomly covering the holes with her fingers. The rabbits nearby, of course, do not seem to enjoy Komaru's playing and begin hissing at her, causing her to stop playing immediately. ]

U-Um...I don't think it's working...
sobored: (What's That? You Don't Want To Go?)

[personal profile] sobored 2016-08-04 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
[No, that's definitely not what it working should look like, so let Junko try and well, honestly, make things worse. That's what she's going for.]

Do you want me to give it a shot? I can't promise I'll do any better, but...

[There is no end to that sentence. Sure, normally it'd end it “it can't get worse,” but it of course, can.]
