Welcome to empatheias' test drive meme. This test drive is to help interested players test their characters in the game's environment. We've included a few prompts that incorporate specific elements of the game, though you'll find all of them have a lot of leeway for players to get as creative as necessary. Before diving in, here are a few things we'd like to remind everyone about the game in general:

• Date reminders. Reserves open Wednesday, September 24th and Applications open Wednesday, October 1st.
  
  
• Emotions are key! Empatheias' premise focuses on how anyone's emotions can affect their environment, be it big or small. While not every emotion will cause a reaction, significant ones definitely will. How much effect a character will have will ultimately be up to you, the player. Also, while we're giving a lot of leeway for the test drive, keep in mind that there will be some limits in the actual game.
  
  
• Everyone has an amulet. All characters have a unique amulet that is specialized for them. It will contain all of their emotion drops and it serves as the network device. Remember, communication is telepathic. Otherwise, it works basically the same.
  
  
• Assume the character is already in the game. Because "OMG WHERE AM I IS THIS REAL LIFE" threads aren't going to be very helpful in this test drive! Plus those are going to happen in-game, anyway. So to make things easier, just assume that they've been around at least a week or so. Still learning the ropes, but not a complete "first day" experience.
  
  
• First or third person allowed. Your threads can be in either first or third, but we'd advise being flexible about it. Remember, these threads can also be used in your application for samples!

Now with that out of the way, here are some prompts you guys can work from!


PROMPTS

• Prompt A: Create any scenario that could cause your character to display some kind of emotion, be it big or small, and write out how it changes the immediate area. Are there literal sparkles everywhere because they're so happy? Or is the ground starting to twist and warp due to their anger or frustration? Things exploding? Rain clouds? Since this is a test drive, don't worry about any limitations on effects—just write whatever comes to mind! OR write a prompt where they're the ones being affected by someone else's emotion.

• Prompt B: Refer to the Task Board and choose a task your character may be interested in taking up. For this prompt, you could have your character ask for help, already be in the middle of the job, or react to it in some way. Perhaps they were an unfortunate victim or want to create a job countering an existing one. You could even have a prompt making a job request.

• Prompt C: How about giving the amulets a go? Start a telepathic conversation and see how it works. Remember, the amulets are sending out the owner's thoughts so might want to be careful about how the stream of consciousness goes…

• Prompt D: How good is your character using an elemental core? They're magic-like rocks that have one of the three following elements: fire, air, and water. On their own they're not too bad, but they are quite sensitive to emotions. Be careful or that little handwarmer could suddenly create a small blazing inferno!

• Prompt E: Steampunk technology is a lot more advanced than basic medieval technology, but still inferior to modern day devices. No electricity, no cars—just this strange magitech, steam, and clockwork gear systems. How "tech savvy" is your character now?

• Prompt F: BONUS EVENT BASED PROMPT! You were just minding your own business when suddenly you and another person swap emotions. Were they upset and you were calm? Well now you are upset and they're the one trying to calm you down! For this prompt, you can either just have your character a target for someone else to swap with, or you can already have them experiencing some kind of emotion to be swapped with.

• Prompt G: Make your own! It can even involve bulls and a bucket.

For your threads, put the Character Name and the Canon in the subject line to help readily identify them. You're also welcome to use more than one prompt for respondents to choose from. If you have any questions or want to brush up on the game information, refer to the Game Information entry. Otherwise, tag around and have fun!

[No cars until someone builds one at least. After spending the last week or two working in his garage, Edgar appears on the streets of Verens in the most dramatic way possible! He has fashioned a crude automobile out of local technology. You know, just to see if he could.

Now it is roaring down the streets of Verens at the blazing speed of around ten miles an hour, leaving a cloud of black smoke behind it. Edgar's concern seems out of proportion until you hear him as he rolls by.]

THE BRAKES! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE BRAKES!?

[The job of the day: mucking out the winter stables at a local farm. Edgar is trudging away from the building with a bucket in each hand, full of...something foul smelling. He gives a bull in the field a dirty look, which it returns blankly while chewing cud.]

Don't give me that look. You should be the one cleaning this crap out.

[He empties both buckets into the bin marked "fertilizer" and stops for a moment to stare into the sky as if in prayer.]

Ugh. Oh for the days when royalty counted for something.

[after being here for a while and only seeing horse drawn carriages, seeing what looks like one of those really old-timey automobiles "whizz" toward him is quite the sight. ...until he heard the guy kind of screaming.

even though it's going at a pretty slow pace, it would be kind of bad if he hit a hill and—

oh wait. there is a hill. going down. that Shizuo just walked up. well that ten miles an hour might be escalating really quickly if he's not stopped and Shizuo is noting this.

HERE. HE'LL HELP.

by running up to it and actually setting himself in front of the car, grabbing the hood, digging his heels in, and basically acting as a one-person brick wall. because it really doesn't take much for him to stop it.]

[She can handle rain. She can handle people being rude. She can even handle being tossed into another dimension when in the middle of something important. When all three happen in conjunction, her patience starts to wear a bit thin though.

So you have a woman in heavy armor standing outside a restaurant in the rain, hand on the hilt of her sword, looking patient. She would look MORE patient if the puddle around her feet wasn't boiling violently]

Tch. I'd have their heads for this if I could.

After encountering so many psychic children, it almost seems natural to be using such powers myself.

"Drummer looking for guitarist, singer, bass player, other (?), for purpose of starting a band. Genre of choice is Heavy Metal, but willing to branch out.

[Tyabur has a look of intense concentration on his face, but it's hard to see because he's about eight feet up in the air. His hands are stuck out to either side, occasionally waving around as he tries to keep his balance on...well...nothing. What's he doing up there?]

Don't say anything. Please. I need to-

[Whups. He waves his arms wildly, trying to catch his balance, but it looks like he's about to fall.]

[Fran the Chef might not pay well, but she pays regular, and Jacqli can still do other jobs on the side. That doesn't excuse her policy of open carry though, nor her oddly designed maid outfit. I mean, that's not standard uniform for waitstaff! And she isn't even trying to make this a pleasant dining experience-color and taste seems flat when she's near a table. Of course, that's what happens when the waitstaff is bored in Empathias.

Maybe you know Jacqli and are aware of how hard she's working to saveup money. Or maybe the bags under her eyes are the tip off. Whatever the reason-try and brighten up her day, before the doom and gloom ruins your meal. Or just, you know, tell her off like everyone else does for not being sufficiently cheery about this whole situation.]

[You might have seen people use elemental cores before. But you've probably never seen someone sing a hymn to one in order to stoke a forge. Jacqli's got her hair tied up, and is singing loudly as she works the metal over the heat, preparing to make something. Maybe it's a commission, maybe it's just a private project for her own use, but she's definitely not the sort you think of to be a blacksmith.]

[ Finding a stuffed animal can't be that hard, can it? Well, to be honest, Julius never really had stuffed animals as a kid, but it's like having a pet or something, probably. He's not what you'd call great with kids, but the price seemed right and it's a little better than his usual job.

A lot better than his usual job.

Sure, he missed the whole bit about how the girl was spending her dad's money to reward people but who cares where the money's coming from, really? Money is money, and the dad probably deserves it for hiding her stuffed animal anyway. Maybe with this he could buy some tomatoes. ]

Well, the note said to start here, so I might as well.

[ Is standing outside a window, ready to break into this girl's house to loot her dad's room while they're both away? Maybe. Jesus, Julius, what the hell are you doing and how did you convince anyone to join you. ]

Prompt A

[Having just appeared in this new area, Ratchet was still trying to find his way around. At least he wasn't tromping around in his original size. Things were much more manageable. But his thoughts started to wander as he explores his new surroundings.

He furrows his brow ridges. How was his team doing without him? The last thing he truly remembered was Optimus making his ultimate sacrifice, and the well of sparks exploding with life--

Ratchet was suddenly jolted out of his thoughts as he looks down at his chestplate, to see a few raindrops patter down onto it. Flinching, he looks up at teh sky. It was bright out. How could there possibly be rain? There was no cloud to be seen!

Well, that was until he tilts his head up higher, seeing a small raincloud above his head. His face contorts into confusion as he stares up at the single cloud above his head. Softly raining down on his frame. The rain tinks against his plating as he stares up at the strange phenomenon above his head.]

What in the name of Primus...?

[He even moves his body from side to side. Yep, that raincloud was still following him no matter which way he bopped his head.]

G-Get out of here! [He waves his hands at the opposing rain cloud, but it didn't seemed phased by Ratchet's hands passing through it.]


Prompt C

[This was all something to get adjusted to. Being the size of a human. It was an entirely new perspective. And this strange amulet around his neck cables. People said you could possibly connect with others through it. With telepathy? Ratchet rolls his optics at the mere thought of it. Magic? Ridiculous.

Ratchet stares at his amulet almost accusingly as his stream of thoughts start to filter through the amulet.]

They expect us to communicate through these? Preposterous! It's just a rock!

It is by no means any source of communication. I highly doubt thinking at a rock will send any sort of communication without any kind of electrical or radio wave connection.

I don't think they have radios here- I'm not even sure if they have any electricity, since everything is powered by elemental cores and emotional energy.

Athena Cykes | Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies | Prompt B

[After being here for a few days, Athena thought it would be good to search for a job. She was hoping to find something of interest, but nothing really matched her area of law or therapy. Looking amongst the different jobs, she was trying to search for something to do.]

What's with these jobs...? They're so random and off the wall...

[And while searching for a job on the Task Board, she came across a task that made her shiver. Instinctively reaching for her hair, she put her hands on her head as if to help her calm down.]

T-That's... That's sick! What's wrong with red hair, huh? Stay away from me!

[The hell if she's gong to let anyone shave her head.]

[As somebody has has her own parent issues, seeing that a mother's child was missing really got to her. She couldn't help but feel a knot in her stomach upon thinking of her own regrets. After visiting the mother, she was more confident that she was going to try to take on this job. She had to find that boy. He was probably scared and lonely. That wouldn't do, so you might run into her asking if you'd seen a lost boy or just see her passing by.]

This girl seems to be one of those that they would threaten.

Simply looking down at her, he comments:]

[His voice, being deep and heavy, almost sounds threatening. He honestly means no harm and just is curious. She is free to see it as something else...]

King Gaius (Erston Outway) | Tales of Xillia 2

Gaius has found himself in front of a shop with swords, simply staring at the artistry through the window. Now, normally, one would simply think he is finding a new katana for his armory. After all, he is a king and he fights on the battlefield to protect his people. His duty comes far before any personal preference and he would prefer for people to usually see it that way. Same thing for getting to know his citizens, learning about who they are so he can serve them to the best of his ability. Running a country is not about him. It's about the people who inhabit it and look up to him for anything that involves policy.

However, the sparkles around him seem to indicate that he is not just choosing a weapon for war, but excited about something. While he might be vocal as Erston Outway about fighting at the coliseum, he still prefers to stay somewhat reserved.

So while he is wearing the persona of the playboy aristocrat, he likes to try to play it cool.

This place that reads his emotions is doing a terrible job at that. If you don't think he doesn't notice this sorcery going on around him, you're terribly mistaken.

Prompt B

The taskboard appears to be a lot like the job board back home. Taking on jobs for simple items and money appears to be a wonderful democratic approach to helping others. Here, let him help with a subjugation mission as he takes on some wolves. Join him if you would like. He will lead you to the path of victory!

[She continues to stare and pout a little as she tries to think of a way she could use the board to get some help.]

Wow! So many books I've never seen before! [watch at her try to lean in even closer. that poor shopkeeper is going to have a time washing those smudges off.] I don't know any of these authors... I wonder if they're any good? I mean, I won't know unless I read one of their books, right? So that means I should buy one! Or maybe two? Three?

"What the HELL?"

The voice may or may not be familiar, but someone is clearly upset. The air around Luke is hot and getting more and more humid as time passes. He's standing outside a shop and digging through his pockets, looking for something. "Where's my money?!" At least he knows he needs money, which may not be apparent from his long unruly red hair. He's learned all about spending and saving by now! Especially here, but his wallet seems to be gone and with it the money he'd actually EARNED while taking a few of the tasks off the board earlier in the week. He probably just left it at home, but that won't be important to Luke until he remembers it. For right now, the air is starting to sway in the heat around him as he gets more and more frustrated.

"Someone took it!"

Hey! Someone pay attention for a second.

[Luke pulls his amulet out of his pocket and sighs a little. It's not like talking to someone through his thoughts is odd to him, but the idea of it just makes him think of Asch and makes his head throb a little in phantom pains that piss him off. The last memory he had of home was waking up in Yulia City knowing that Asch had gone off with all of his friends and everyone but Mieu and Tear had abandoned him, so the memory hurts... a lot. Which, depending on how much someone is paying attention, is being conveyed over Luke's thoughts for a split second before he shakes it off and rubs the side of his head a little.]

I'm hungry, let's get food or something.

[He doesn't want to be alone right now, and food is a good excuse.]

[The technology here really suits Luke, because it's about on par with Auldrant's own even if it's a little more advanced when it came to communication and other things like that. What he really cares about is that they have records and music and sounds and that's so important to the young teen. As someone who spent most of his life trapped inside his own home, listening to what the world outside sounded like had been an escape for Luke and he loved it. He couldn't get any of the records he had back home in his room, but the ones here in the shops were almost as good. Fonic sounded a lot better being sung, after all, so nothing could really compare to it. Recently, Luke's discovered portable music here in Empatheias so he's sitting outside with his headphones on humming along as he just enjoys it. The air is calm around him and warming up nicely this time, even producing a few sparkles around him. Someone might catch him singing along, but he'll only be embarrassed if they mention it. For now, he's busy ignoring everything else in favor of these "tiny records".]

[Poor Sango just can't catch a break. One minute she's walking around the city with her little demon cat in her arms, and the next minute said demon cat has jumped on top of some random store's awning to hiss at this barking pack of dogs.]

Leave her alone! [She's just standing on the sidelines, fussing at the dogs who clearly don't care about her before turning to look at the cause of it all--you.] Can't you make them stop?

Simon Blackquill | Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies

If there's one thing Simon Blackquill never expected, it was to find freedom from prison walls in such a baffling way as this. Any transition from seven years consigned to death row to the ordinary life of a free man would be a shock enough, so adjusting to it in another world altogether has left him reeling ever since his arrival.

Even so, he has mixed emotions about being free. So as he walks the streets there are distant, grey clouds that seem to follow him overhead, punctuated by a sharp and brisk breeze that pulls out the sunshine for the briefest moments... only for it to be obscured by clouds again.

"The weather is rather droll here, wouldn't you agree, Taka?" He reaches up to give the hawk on his shoulder scritches.

Blackquill finds that he's actually growing fond of the old-fashioned technology here. Even if the lack of 21st century convenience leaves something to be desired, there's something endearingly quaint about airships and horse-drawn carriages. And, of course, swords. Bitches love swords.

Today, though, he's wondering if there's any gadgets small enough that he could bring back home for his sister -- if he ever goes home. She'd probably love the idea of a city full of engineers and machinists, even if their inventions aren't quite up to scratch with her robots. Perhaps he could bring her a pocket watch? Goggles...? He pauses at one shop window, spotting a brass miniature planetarium.

It would be perfect, if the price tag wasn't eye-watering.

Luke is very mature you see, but he's also talking to someone... apparently. The redhead stops in the street to look at Blackquill and his bird, before up at the clouds above his head and then back to Taka. Mieu is on his own shoulder and the little... thing is peering at Taka curiously but also cautiously. Cheagles are prey animals after all! He sometimes forgets that he can spew fire and also this bird is probably a normal bird and not a monster. Luke's definitely one to talk about a "weird" pet, all things considered.

He doesn't mention the weird weather, even if it's making him a little cold and uncomfortable, but his curiosity is making his own emotions crackle a bit. It's most unnoticeable, Luke is so preoccupied he almost trips coming to get a closer look.

"Hey, does he just stay there like that? My mom had a pet bird once too."

A With a Twist

[Atomic structure, normal. Chemical composition, normal. Temporal anomalies, none. A glowing rose petal drifting down, smelling faintly of perfume-- oh, for goodness sakes!]

Do you mind? [The Doctor shouts, poking his head up and over the railing of the outdoor terrace of the charming little cafe and grumpily furrowing his brow at the startled couple there.] Some of us are trying to work here and it's difficult enough without you two getting your... emotions all over everything!

[With the lovebirds suitably chastised, the Doctor ducks back down and continues sifting through the small rocks in the flower bed. Honestly, some people....

The only question is, are you passing by or did you just get yelled at by the strange old man?]

[Human beings, puddingheads, whatever you wanted to call them they certainly did enjoy jumping to conclusions. It had all started when such a conclusion had been jumped to after he'd introduced himself, and next thing he knew everyone seemed to be coming to him with their various maladies.

Of course he can't very well operate out on the street, so the next step was to commandeer a location of sorts. The next was to acquire tools and equipment, which cost money so he'd begun asking for small contributions. [Leon refuses to believe he's been reduced to meager tasks more suited to peasants and foot soldiers, but the problem with not being home (and probably the only problem about not being home) was that he lacked money. Due to his travels he's used to sleeping in inns and other more humble forms of culture but... Leon has quite a sweet tooth and pastries are expensive. They're even more expensive in this strange place, with its more advanced society so he was at a loss without any cash to curb his cravings.]

[So here he was, a (former) captain of the knights, capturing butterflies of all the things. He disliked animals and hadn't want to put forth any real effort for a commoner to make any gald, so he'd taken what seemed like an easy task. Unluckily for him, the butterflies were proving difficult to put into the small jars and he'd already ripped one of the pairs in his impatience. Finally capturing another set, the young teen huffed out a breath and threw the jar into his bag.]

The elemental cores were strange but almost... familiar in a way too. Somehow, Leon was almost reminded of Chaltier when holding one and testing its strengths and weaknesses. Of course, he wouldn't liken a simple charm to his oldest companion (if only to keep that companion from whining incessantly) but it held a vague similarity. He'd only ever been able to utilize earth magic with his Swordian friend, so using the core had become incredibly useful to Leon. Right now, he's sitting outside and attempting to master the basics of fire. Stahn's fire magic had been powerful and intense and he wondered if he could do the same thing. Chaltier is laying across his lap, the Lens Stone on his hilt upward so he could observe as well, even if all he seemed to be doing was chiding Leon to be careful.

"It's fine," Leon said, presumably to no one. Not many could hear the Swordian's voices after all. "Chal, you of all people know I'm perfectly in control of my emotions. I won't let it get out of hand."

There's a big pile of buckets. I mean no big deal right, just some cleaning supplies. But for some reason Dave keeps glancing over at them, then looking around nervously, like you might at someone reading porn on the subway.

These amulets were rather amazing. Also annoying. Alice can't say she would have ever wanted a piece of jewelry that opens up communication via the mind. Oh, sure, it could be convenient, useful and a time saver, but the mere idea that anyone could call her up, inside her mind, just rubbed her the wrong way. It felt like it invalidated any privacy she ever could have had.

But she was still interested in the thing. It was obviously a form of magic item, to have these powers, and that means investigation. It appeared to have properties she wasn't entirely sure of how they worked, however the communication aspect was a good start. Questions of how far it can reach a person, what state of mind can work and how many 'mind links' one could have at a time.

But Alice wanted to know one thing. Could she do this... with herself? To attempt to find this out, Alice holds tightly to one of her dolls, and tries to communicate with it. It's not exactly working so her thoughts are a bit free.

Thoughts such as a normal 'Can you hear me?', a not so normal 'What a cute little doll you are.' and a exceedingly not normal 'Communications open! Trying to reach you, Master!' which comes in a quite cutesy manner.

The aesthetic of this land is something that causes Alice to look upon it all in wonder. It was all like something out of a book, a strange story she could only read about, but never actually see. Until now, anyway. She wasn't interested in how it all works, that was far outside her normal interests. But she found herself in an almost childlike glee of just being here, looking at everything. Even though her mind was wrapped in viewing all that there is to see, she still paid enough attention not to run into or bother anyone else that could be around.

Though she isn't paying enough attention to immediately recognize if she is being addressed.

Arching a brow, he cants his head to the side, blue eyes hooded as he speaks lightly.]

All the effort to avoid magic, to leave it to the Summer Clan out beyond the gates back in Dorstaad, and they practically flaunt it here. Bronze gods, but I don't have time for this. Although... it does get me out of the Archives. Another day wading through dusty old tomes of House bloodlines and I'd try claiming age madness. Captain might even let it slide without taking my pay for the rest of the month just to keep me out of HQ.

Like as not, though, Ritsuko'd just bring the damnable books to my flat and attempt to bore me back to sanity...

Unfortunately for anyone listening, Mikani hasn't bothered to actually focus his thoughts, so they're privy to his ramblings rather than a concerted effort to communicate on his part.]

There is also the smell of the sea in the air, a hint of fish and salt, and the skies overhead in the local vicinity were a heavy dark charcoal color with a sharp breeze gusting about like a coming storm.

It's clear from the young man's profile that there were tears sliding down his cheeks, widened red eyes bright and wet, before he whirls away from the man and wipes at his face with his sleeve hurriedly.]

[So that ogre hunt? It went... okay. Late in the day, with the sun setting over the horizon, Ryuko shuffles back into town all dusted up from a day's worth of fighting big, smelly monsters. She makes her way up to a small restaurant and flops down in one of the chairs, letting her guitar case thud against the table beside her. A quick order for something to drink, and she leans back, looking up at the sky for a moment and then sighs heavily and roots around in her case, eventually coming up with a hilt and part of a broken sword blade.]

... Piece of junk.

[She grimaces at the broken weapon and tosses it onto the table in front of her before going back to pondering the sky up above. Maybe she should start carrying a spare.]

Of course, all that jealousy is only making the ground start to dark, and the tips of her hair turn to green in her envy ].
